More than £3.8bn of goods were stolen from British stores last year - the highest figure of anywhere in Europe.

The additional price of fighting retail crime pushed the overall bill to £4.3bn, according to the European Retail Theft Barometer.

Stores selling non-food items, like books and stationery, suffered the highest levels of retail theft, followed by clothing and textile stores.

Sky news story here...

So, the cost of fighting shoplifting is higher than the cost of the goods pilfered..

should the penaltyfor theft be to chop off the offeners hands or a finger?

How would you deal with it.?

i think we should set up a penal colony in Afghanistan and send all criminals there. That way, in 100 years from now there will be another country to beat us at rugby and cricket.

About 30 years ago I had a part-time job in a supermarket in England whilst I was studying in the 6th form.
Anyway, another branch of the store was closed down because there was as much stock going out of the back door as there was the front door!

Not quite. the article says that it pushes the overall bill for shoplifting up to 4.3 billion. Half a billion was spent fighting it (which of course is lots and lots too)

No suprise. The law was changed so the police could just caution the culprits instead of it being classified as a "crime". It is supposed to help the police cut down on paperwork, according to the government but statistically, it is a great way to get the crime figures down biggrin.gif

let the police give the gits a good beating may be stamp in there sticky fingers.I hate paying inflated prices so some littel scally can have it for free. And they should punnish the people who buy stolen goods even more.NO market to sell a big drop in crime. ph34r.gif

Sunday morning floggings on the village green is the way forward. Would be great. Raffles, beertent, pig roast, a tombola of course, maybe a few little stalls selling local produce, morris dancers, and seeing young oiks getting horsewhipped. Would be a lovely little community event, everybody would love it. I'd certainly go, and no doubt eat a few delicious grilled snacks whilst there. Lovely.

Well, looking at the shoplifting confessions thread, I reckon we could organise such an event in Munich for all those thieving little TT'ers that have gone unpunished up to now. Would liven up the Englischer Garten a bit! (Insert "evil grin" smiley here)

Well the australians have come up with a great idea for dealing with wrong-doers:

Kind of efficient solution don't you think ?
Put the most disobedient prisoners tending crocs - they disobey get eaten. Cheap solution all round - cheap labour, failing that - cheap crop feed and less money to spend on keeping a prisoner ! biggrin.gif
