I am assuming that this is the WEP password...sounds like you need to check if you are on HEX or ASCII when puting the password in
also it might help if you dodnt put this in Life in Hamburg the TT tech squad dont normally read that forum unless they live in Hamburg

In my experience it's always best to put the password in hex as some equipment does not accept ASCII. Just put in phrases like DEADBABE, ABADCAFE, BADB00B5 or DEADBEEF and some numbers to fill up the key. There's usually a radio button to select what type of key you're entering, but often if you select ASCII it will convert what you entered into hex and I'm not sure that the ASCII->HEX conversion is always the same across all equipment.
ok... still feeling stupid..
I am using an HP with XP, in german.
I don't know if i am using hex or ascii. there are no radio buttons.
how do i switch between the 2?
my roommate has a mac...but that shouldn't matter...oder?

We need to know the hardware you're running, both the router and the NIC (network interface card).

It shouldnt matter at all what your or your room mate are using in terms of Mac v PC. where the radio button depends on what software you are using to access the network. I use the driver software that came with my mother board to access the network, that has a button next to where you type the wep password in and switches between hex and ascii. I think windows is the same.

Ask your roommate to use the Airport Manager program on his Mac (under Applications or Utilities, I think) and click on the Lock icon after selecting the AirPort. It will then display the HEX equivalent password of the router that you should use on your computer. The 11 letter password won't work, depending on the security settings.
More help is available on the apple support pages, or if the above doesn't work I can look again at my setup at home.
Course, this all assumes that when you say your roommate "is running Mac" that he also has an Airport.
