What is the offical way of saying this in English?

Entlastung is a credit or relief

When sending back material that we are finished with...

They can't be bothered to file your application/paper/work...

We are returning your ...
Forget about the Entlastung bit, I always found it very rude: We don't want your junk cluttering up our files.

We are returning your documents to exonerate ourselves (i.e. to free ourselves from a responsibility or obligation).

Returning your material at our cost.

Nahhh, got nought to do with who pays the postage I'm afraid. It just means the company doesn't want to keep her papers and are returning them so that they can't be made responsible for anything.

In English correspondence I've only ever seen something like "we are returning your file / accompanying documents, etc." with the "Encl." mention at the end of the letter.

I too would be interested to know whether there is some accepted wording (for English correspondence) that includes the notion of release of responsibility. Anyone?

I don't normally use fancy words...so not THAT sure but it's a try...?

Thanks. I was looking for a precedent, if you like, i.e. whether anyone has actually already seen or used a similar phrase in English correspondence.

I imagine it would be worded totally different if an English company said it. More along the lines of "To help complete your records and to clear ours, we are returning your documents. Please note we have no other copy on file, these are the originals" or some la-di-da like that.

How about something like "We are returning your (papers) for safekeeping."? Perhaps not quite as blunt as "zu unserer Entlastung"!

We have enclosed your documents, despatched through registered delivery.

It doesn't actually imply registered delivery. It's simply that something is being returned rather than dumped. "Zu unserer Entlastung" is almost superfluous, but it kind of rounds the sentence off in German.

In the case of job applications, when papers are returned, rejection letters often end "We are returning your CV/application with thanks." Or, another "official" way of signing off: "Thank you for your ... bla bla... which we are returning herewith."

yes, that is true . but if you are dumping sth do it with style. It is the thought that counts.??
I would send back materials if unasked for with:
As courtesy we are returning your "application" through registered delivery.

As company policy and with thanks, we are returning your ____ through registered delivery.

Actually i just got that sentence in a letter off my lawyer.It basically means that the matter is finished and they want no more to do with it.
Entlastung would be generally translated as `it frees us of the matter concerned`
