ah then the force is strong in that one. anyhoo, i dont know why the conversation has to be just about burquas and chadors, sure she asked specifically about those people but theres also other attire such as dirndls and saris to be seen. Id just point them all out to her .. I think it would be a nice culture conversation for now ... I bet the HugenDubel or amazon even has a children's book depicting various "costumes" that she would enjoy.
Renia
Yes comparing it to a dirndl is a good idea too!

Good point jml. Perhaps during Ramadan, the women of TT could all doll themselves up in their burqas to show how culturally aware they are. Then we could have a thread similar to this one :
TT women in their dirndln "Oh XXXXX you look divine, I love the colour, black is so you..."

The men's forum thread would be even more interesting.

And perhaps Ed Bob could restrict the use of smileys so that only this one could be used.

On a more serious note, Kza hit a six with his, - "how do you explain lipstick and high heels". In general people do what is the social norm (although there are always exceptions) Saudi women don burqas as it's what their culture considers normal (not that they have much choice), women in Australia don little black frocks and high heels on friday night and drink stollis as it's considered normal.

Ask your daughter why she wears wiggles(insert appropriate fad) tshirts.

You'd be surprised what is under the burqas - designer skirts and high heels...

Really intersting to go to a Qatari wedding, where at the ladies only function, once through the doors the burqas come off and glamourous fashion conscious women emerge.

We're in Ramadan now. Started Sunday.
On a side note, Jewish New Year was last Friday and Saturday.
It somehow amazes me per se that so many can get their knickers in a twist about various faiths and then not know basic information about them (ths isn't a dig at you, oh Dearest Friend of the Seagulls).
That's why I thought it best to keep the explanation to the kiddy simple and neutral - there's already far too much disinformation and ignorance out there.

Maybe part of the deal is that it is actually erotic to have to imagine what is under the wrapping paper.
Renia
But isn' t the whole point of the burqa to avoid eroticism, not to whip it up into a frenzy...? It seems whatever women do, men will be men and get turned on, whether women are wearing a burqa, a dirndl or bikini.
Kza
Or even nothing at all, which just goes to show its not just the outer appearance or clothing we are attracted to.
Yeti
Actually Renia, women don't have to do anything, they don't even have to be around.

If I can refer you to the excellent Tommy Tiernan:

(Today is my Tommy Tiernan for pope day)

At least you`re not shallow...

@Yeti, checking out Tommy now...
Kza
Exactly, puss is puss no matter what its wearing.

It is. Joke all you want, but the point is that in practice it works. (Compare the divorce rate for instance in Islamic countries to other countries, given that Islam is more permitting of divorce than other religions.) It doesn't whip up a frenzy except for someone who's trying to find an excuse to invalidate it.

Ah but don't forget that men suffer from the IE syndrom. The Inappropriate Erection, caused by too tight jeans, too lose jeans, improperly adjusted boxers or god knows what .

So there you are, waiting in a queue at the bank or whatever and there it is. Now with the state of my bank account it's not exactly exciting going to the bank except in an S&M way, with the emphasis on the M part.

Grand, you sidle up to the counter and try to ignore and it won't go away.

And then sometimes where is the little fucker when you actually need him ? Thinking about the bank account and nothing is happening, nothing.

I'll tell you, that's when you need a PSP for.

microX are you implying that women are on an even playing field with men in Islamic countries? That most women willing wear the Burka (given a choice)? Curious?

Even with a burka on the same sexes can't even sit in a sports areana together? Why?

Same reason. Trying to eliminate any situations that a man and woman will be physically attracted.
