Hi there!
All miniMal and HL supermarkets as well as some regional companies belonging to
Rewe Group will be renamed "REWE" on Monday, 25th September 2006. About 3,000 supermarkets throughout Germany will carry the relauchned logo "Rewe". There will be more own-store brands from discount to premium products and a lot of other services - check out:

The change will only affect:
Rewe
MiniMal
Rewe Center
Petz
R-Kauf
Otto Mess
HL
Stussgen Kontra
Other REWE Flagship stores will not be changing:
Vierlinden
Toom
Penny
Globus

Oh yuck. I hate the name Rewe. I much prefer going to the MiniMal. This disgusts me almost as much as when I discovered Estee Lauder owns Aveda
and MAC.

The real question is will they reorganize the
inside to more closely resemble a German grocery store ala
Tengelmann?
I really like spaciousness and selection of MiniMal!

That'll explain all the red and white balloons outside of my local MiniMal today then!

It looks like the insides will be staying the same and they are only changing the name.

One of their flagship stores is Penny. That's promising. As if supermarkets weren't bad enough as it is.

I was just at my MiniMal/Rewa- its staying the same, but new bags, baskets (the red ones) and signs, but everything else is the same. Great sales too, and free Prosecco. Like I need to drink more?

They will definetely not change into penny or
Aldi...
About 600 new supermarkets are due to be opened until 2010 across Germany. The store layout will be improved and also the selection of products will be widened. Rewes main aim is to fight back against discount markets like penny ,
lidl or aldi.
There are also new
Tengelmann stores called "Tengelmann -unwiderstehlich frisch" which have basically nothing in common with the old Tengelmann stores. Fresh deli counters , hot takeaways, child drinks (on ice) and a very good store layout are typical for these new Tengelmanns. Check the picture from ottobrunn store...

Reread the above posts... Penny is a REWE Company. It wouldn't make much sense to fight themselves now would it

Well... Saturn and MediaMarkt are owned by the same group, for instance...
EDIT: as you mentioned yourself in your topic - just saw that.

oi, the Rewe near me is a dump. They would have been better off renaming the stores anything BUT Rewe. I would have thought
Mini Mal had much better associations with customers.

@JW
Execpt for certain local specials or slaes, both stores usually have the same items at the same prices. And since both stores are owned by the same people, there is no competition. As the Main owner still get a $hit load of $$$

Actually stratification of products is one of the smartest things a company can do. So, yes, it would make sense to market to two different purchasers.

Minimal, Rewe, I don't care what they call themselves...I miss my US grocery stores. I hate the grocery stores here in Germany. The only one I can tolerate is HIT.

The Rewe (formerly Minimal) in Rosenkavalierplatz is excellent, almost up to par with American supermarkets.

on the radio this morning they were pronouncing it Ray-vuh rather than Ray-veh (which is how I'd have expected it to be pronounced). Strange.

Sep 26 2006, 8:13 am
Yeah dat's what I guessed it'd be: [Ray-ver] as -e endings aren't 'ey' but 'er' in German. i.e. Heike = [Hi-ker]
Eleanor Rigby
Sep 26 2006, 8:13 am
Then they are pronouncing it wrong on the Radio.
I don't understand the er sound you're referring to? I don't agree with that at all, Heike is definitely not pronounced with an r on the end but maybe I hear the sound differently because I grew up speaking the language.

i think UA is referring to how we would pronouce it in Britsh English. An "er" at the end of a word is also pronounced like "uh". Like River, tower flower etc = Riv-uh, tow-uh, flow-uh etc etc. there is no distinct "r" sound as there is in German.
So Heike and Hiker and pronounced virtually the same in British English.
Eleanor Rigby
Sep 26 2006, 8:37 am
ah ok, that makes more sense.
An American "r" is a little bit more distinct (urrr) and a German "r" is very distinct (ehrr).

Me and my lady drove through town last night and saw all the MiniMals we passed had turned red and were renamed REWE ... in fact I'd been to one for lunch that day, but I figured the totally red bag with REWE on the side was an advert for washing powder or some new meat product ... anyway
I tried pronouncing it but apparently I said the name wrong ...
She persisted in trying to get me to pronounce it - with a rolling 'R' at the start, and then into a word resembling 'raver' ...
I said I couldn’t get used to it.
She said I'd have to, it was a case of adjusting...
I suggested that she would then get used to my pronunciation...
Still, she tried and tried to get me to pronounce it correctly... but whenever I tried it came out wrong ... so I plan to stick with my own pronunciation...

You could also try "The shop formally known as MinMal".
My local HL had only just become a MiniMal, which will confuse the pensioners no end. OK, so that happened about 3 years ago, but anyway.

Oh cheers Katrina I might nip in the Raver on Arnulfstrasse before I nip over to
Aldi at the weekend to cruis the Turkish lads.
It's not that difficult to pronounce it: Check the advert -film on their webpage:
www.rewe.de At the end of the advert the woman says "REWE- jeden Tag ein bisschen besser" (REWE-a little better every day")
REWE- supermarket:

I must say I'm really impressed by the "Formally known as Minimal" now known as REWE supermarkets, they're clean, have nicely kept fruit and veg and have a good choice. At least the one in Freising and the one in that new area just off Domagstrasse are. Obviously more expensive than
pennymarkt, but they just about give their stuff away and the quality is patchy at best.

I saw my first Rewe advert yesterday, the slogan made me laugh. it sounds like they're a new company learning and slowly improving 'jeden Tag ein bisschen besser' - a bit better every day.

"And they looked from pig to man and from man to pig and already they could see no difference"
Mrs B went to our new reve the other day, formerly an HL Markt.
they appeared to be having some kind of supply problem as all the shelves were either empty, or completely filled with one brand of one product. MMh 3 meters of ham. They also had no shopping trolleys, just a small pile of baskets and the usual mix of crap selection, crap service and rude joyless gits who work there.
We like AEZ in Martinsried, ok the premises are just awful, but the range is good, the staff are ( oh my god should I really admit this about a german supermarket ) very friendly and helpful. We get our supplies of salted butter, cheddar cheese and bacon there.
