Expat pubs and bars in Munich

Is there an American bar in the city?

OK so i was chatting to one of our colonial cousins from across the water the other day and we were discussing expat haunts and their relative merits and the question arose where do all the Americans go for a few shandies?

Now i know there are a fair few Americans at TT events but considering that the breakdown of expats by nationality puts Brits and Yanks as being more or less 1 to 1 where is everyone?
  • Outland - Aussie pub but mostly frequented by Brits
  • Arc - Aussie / International pub does have some americans as they show NFL, NBA etc
  • Lots of Irish pubs frequented by Irish, Brits, lots of Germans
So, where are all the Yanks and what is the preferred watering hole? Are they a) more integrated into the community than yer average Brit so they are not as noticeable? Or do the tend to stay in more rather than going out on the lash?
Joliet Jake
Typical friggin' Brit. Surrounded by Americans when he goes out but completely oblivious. wink.gif

Americans go to Starbucks of course. Idiots.
mrbrain
Take out the drunk Brits and cigarette smoke, and the Arc is essentially an American bar. Football and burgers, kid.

Americans are also anti-social -- we stay home a lot. No need for our own pub.

Rarely meet an american here. Once and a while you hear them talking around the tourists spots, but well, just tourists I imagine. I dont think there are many around.

You must not get out much (or at least not with TTers...) Everytime I go to a TT event, there are more Americans than anything else. Much to the chagrin of some. wink.gif

Dead right... too bleeedin' many of 'em ohmy.gif

Where you stand depends upon where you sit, Grinner. wink.gif

It's not the old squat versus standard toilet debate again is it ?
Chicago
there's a couple elements in play here:

1) we don't drink "shandies" *pfft!*
2) it's right there in Batman's profile: "Love to travel and [to meet] people from other countries."
3) we have enough self-confidence that we don't need to go out in massive groups of our own kind.
4) the "american bars" (i.e. Hard Rock Cafe) are overrun with german American-wannabes (and tourists).
5) we don't really like eachother wink.gif

Hard Rock Cafe!!!
Yeti
I wouldn't even wish the Hard Rock Cafe on an American.

Easy tiger - the overwhelming majority of the quality eye candy on TT is american (or canadian, but thats the same shit as far as I am concerned. Same as anyone from eastern europe is russian).

Naw...we just don't like rednecks or Nascar fans. Of course, they usually are one and the same.

There's an American Sports Bar in one of the hotels up Ungererstr smile.gif

That'd be Champions in the Marriott Hotel. But, I just discovered that Premiere (the channel that Champions uses) is not carrying the NFL this year.

Unless you're from the part of the US that likes that sort of thing...

I don't know any places in Munich catering to, or particularly favored by resident Americans. I guess you'd find a fair amount of them in some of the ex-pat bars that cater to English speakers. The few American friends I know just prefer to hang out with friends regardless of nationality; or basically anywhere they can communicate with friendly people.

When friends of mine threw a party a long time ago, and specifically mentioned that an American friend was coming, we each gave the same independent response: "So what?" wink.gif

There was an American Stammtisch listed in the events on TT (and on the "Americans in Munich" MSN group) which I went to a couple of times and was nice - but since (animeli?) stopped organizing, it dropped off the radar.

I think Chicago maybe says it best here. If I'm in the shop for an American friend here anytime soon, I'll check out the Hard Rock Cafe or Starbucks. biggrin.gif

Nice use of the word, we don't hear that word used anyway near enough! smile.gif

There are plenty of Ami's who come and go through the Arc, especially this time of year. Actually, sometimes there's so many in the Arc I find I automatically alter my speech to funny American wording as it saves having to repeat everything over and over in good, proper Queens English (and sometimes I can't be bothered, their loss). tongue.gif

Same as when lots of Aussies are in I suppose, except instead of changing words/tones you only have to cuss more. They can understand proper English fine if you filth it up a bit.

teehee smile.gif wonder what hazza will say to that?

Yanks go to sports bars not pubs. They're fucked over here.
