Meditation groups in Munich

Tips on which ones exist and where they meet etc.

anyone know of any informal meditation groups in Munich meeting on a regular basis?
i'm looking for a group which isn't affiliated to a specific religion or doctrine and without any yoga or trantra content ... just simple meditation!

... I guess the Wies'n period isn't a good time to be asking about spiritual enlightenment ph34r.gif !!!

Hi! I am looking too. I have discovered there are dozens and dozens of groups. I have my eye on the Shambhala center on Wörthstrasse between the Ostbahnhof and Max Weber Platz, and...well many others. Trying to figure out when the different groups meet to meditate and not to do a ritual, and when I can actually make it is tricky. But I am determined! I wish you luck too! Aidan

strictly speaking, its not meditation, but there is a Quaker meeting for silence once per month on the third sunday of each month at the Evangelisch Studentengemeinde which is at Friedrichstr. 25.

Some Quaker meetings can be noisy affairs punctuated by ministry, but the Munich meeting has been entirely silent each time I have been and provides a focused environment for concentrated meditation.

i hadn't heard of the shambhala centre before, so thanks for the tip. they have meditation sessions a few times a week (mondays 19.30 - 21.30, wednesdays 8.00 - 10.00 & thursdays 19.00 - 21.00). they are a buddhist community, but it's not far from where I live, so I am tempted to give it a go if I don't come across any non-denominational groups soon.
would be interested to hear from any non-buddhists TTers who might be attending this group.

@ bell the cat
thanks also for your suggestion

i checked out the shambhala centre and i liked it. on a monday evening it was a mixture of sitting & walking meditation which was great when sitting cross-legged on a cushion too long starts to get uncomfortable. the meditation practice there is a focus on breathing with eyes open. the group was small, informal & friendly and there was an informal introduction for us new-comers, even though we just turned up unangemeldet. the ambience was buddhist, but i didn't get the feeling there was any pressure to subscribe to the buddhist faith in any way. meditation cashions & mats were provided.
i think i'll be going back there again :-)

Anyone know of a meditation center (Buddhist or otherwise) a non-German speaker could attend? Ich studiere, aber mein Deutsch ist nicht noch so gut!

Hi,

Please have a look on this website Vipassana for course information. They conduct courses around the year. You can register online. Its completely free. If you like, you can donate some money...but its not compulsary.

Course information in English Vipassana in English

Good luck.

I don't see the point in meditating in a group without a connection to a doctrine or a religion.
why not meditating in complete solitude then?

anyway there are plenty of groups in munich, but all the groups I know have a religious background.
meditation is just a tool.

Course information in English Vipassana in English

According to the link above these are the precepts for the course ohmy.gif .

All who attend a Vipassana course must conscientiously undertake the following five precepts for the duration of the course:
  1. to abstain from killing any being,
  2. to abstain from stealing;
  3. to abstain from all sexual activity;
  4. to abstain from telling lies;
  5. to abstain from all intoxicants.

Thanks Herkules but I am looking for a something like a weekly group, not just courses...something more like a buddhist sangha (but which includes non-monks/nuns). I know there are plenty of ones here in Munich but am struggling to find one I can join with a very limited knowledge of German. So far everywhere I have contacted has either not replied or indicated that it would be very difficult for me to attend. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
JCon

Hi,
I'm facing the same problem. I would love to participate in the meditation group on the regular basis, but my German is not suficient.
If currently there is no English-speaking meditation group in Munich, may be we can start one.
Please reply/PM me if you would like to give it a try and I can take on myself to set up a place for regular meetings.

Are you interested in Zen? I know a couple of places where they speak English:

http://www.doku-zen.de/

This place is run by a Canadian lay man. I go there now every week for practice. But there is not much instruction given (which is precisely why I go there, because I don't like too much talking in a meditation room.) The nice thing about it is that it is open everyday except Sunday. So you can come in out as you like.

And then there is a place with a teacher (a zen nun). This place is new, the website is not up yet. But here is the email: sozui@web.de
Sozui, the nun, has practiced Zen for 20 years. She is very nice. I think she would great for beginners. The meditation room is at Amalienstrasse in the Deutsche Buddistische Union. The information is also on the DBU website.
