Britain v Germany
We mutually turn each other off. 43% of Germans would never date a British person and the Brits feel the same with over 60% saying they would never date a German.

No suprises there then!

Ha ha ha. We can all guess who has just been emailed that then! biggrin.gif
Keydeck
That's such unmitigated wankology!

Not questioning the fact that the survey gave these results, just the fact that it's complete bollocks. This is a survey of people using an online dating service. Don't try to tell be that if any of these people met and fancied each other that they wouldn't date based on nationality. Ask my arse!
VDB
totally agree with Keydeck.

Put one hundred mixed German-English couples for a month on an isolated island, and see with happens in nine months time. I bet you that will show some interesting statistics.
flogger
true, you will find at least 100 beach towels

Said Keydeck!

I am married to a German and must say in my limited experience they have more class, dignity and warmth than many British girls I knew.

Hey they (many German girls) also sunbathe naked often too.

Fair enough in your experience.. You're hardly gonna say the opposite if you're married to one... but at the end of the day, I'd say there are just as many low-class, undignified and cold girls in germany as britain... Apart from the odd-stereotype you can't generalise...
Jimbo
'both' sides? I thought we agreed it was more like 10 sides for you?
tench
I'll retract that last bit... Asking for it really wasn't I.. tongue.gif
Johnny English
One advantage with dating German girls (I am married to one) is that it is harder for me to instantly recognise their social class or region.

Whereas of course as soon as some bird coming from Essex/Birmingham/Liverpool/Newcastle etc opens her gob I am already running for the exit.

Then again she is probably running for the exit just seeing me - before I've had a chance to open my mouth!
Big C
@je - Isn't that just because you can't tell the accents yet?

As for the survey - I guess the word never is a bit extreme!
don_riina
I gotta agree with Mr English on that one

Also, the brass in Munich is of a very good quality in general and

There are certainly many types, social classes and regional accents in Germany. Munich is certainly not representative of this though.
But they do all like to sunbathe naked - which is nice!
More tea, Vicar?
Interesting point about the accents which is bang on.

It strikes me that Germany generally has none of the class-association that the Brits do with regional accents. In my organisation there are some high-up people with real Bayerische drawls.

I think Chancellor Kohl had a very strong accent too.
Katrina
As someone from Franken who lives in Munich if there's no such thing as snobbishness...

Is it really as much of a social signal as in England?

It strikes me that speaking with a Swabish, Bayerische or Franken accent is a bit like a Texan American speaking in a Southern drawl. It simply denotes where you come from . . . ?
Kza
Not quite. I can tell the difference between posh high-german and normal. Posh high-german has similar tonal differences as posh-english.

I also believe I can tell the difference between normal bavarian and "working-class" bavarian, in that working class is basically stronger.

Its like in school. In the gymnasium you get made fun of if you speak bavarian, in the "lowest" school (always get confused between haupt and real) you get made fun of for speaking high german. So I heard anyway.

Not sure how it is in the "middle" school, everyone probably kind of speaks that bavarian / high german mix...
gideon
wrong totaly. big social stigma here, just as in any country, each regional dialect (accent is the wrong word when discussing the difference here or so i was informed once by a germanistic person) has its own problems. obviously being in barvaria and working for a company where people in higher management are barvarian, a barvarian or austrian accent isnt a problem. in other places and companies barvaraian is considered dumb, a little bit like sächsich, or real kölsch is someone who is comical. or hamburg platt "digger" is cool. each dialect has it associated character, and after a few yeahs you'll tell the difference between a franken and an ober bayern quiet easily.

Its an interesting poll result. Unfortunately for those of us based here, we have little choice in the matter.

living 12 years, visiting and involved in munich nigh on 15 to 16, memory gets fuzzy, son.
put it this way, when i first ever came to munich, gunthers wasnt there, shops shut on weekdays at 5:30 or 6 and on saturday at noon, you couldn't buy bread on a sunday, the only way of keeping in touch with england was waiting for the daily paper in Hbf, which sometimes arrived the next day, you could still buy postcards of the lichterketter, your ex-pat shopping list included HP sauce and salt and vinegar crisps, and the west germans thought the ossis were nicy and funny and were all still happy about unification. and worse i only spoke hochdeutsche which meant i was lost as hell.
islander
I thought the Dutch, German, and British girls were some of the friendliest and prettiest women I met.

I know they say the Danish and Swedish women are beautiful (they are), but they are also really reserved.

The French girls play hard to get a lot. It gets to be a headache because they're always teasing and running games on you.
Sin
WTF???

a babe's a babe's a babe.

Nationality means bugger all.
Yeti
Availability wins over nationality everytime.
islander
I dunno. Those were just the feelings I got travelling in Europe, just superficial observations though.
MajorBummer
I still can't get used to people refering to "high-class" or "low-class" people. My goodness, the year is 2005. Snob-job. Yeah, a babe is a babe and a stud is a stud. Who gives a hoot about the rest?

Anyone been to Lithuania? What fine fillies.
Sin
No mate, but get yourself out to Eastern Slovakia. Qually beer at stupid prices, and beauty... OMG!
