hello

cd you please tell me where i could buy sleeping bags in munich. Nothing fancy but a simple one which my daughter can take on a hiking trip. I have to get this done by tomorrow.

having just arrived we are living out of a suitcase and quite frankly i have no idea where i should look for one. I recall seeing some kind of a sports store outside the rathaus

On another note are there any grocery stores that are atleast slightly bigger than the neighborhood stores. I remember visiting a markthof in the black forest last year cant remember the name of the town and it was a humongous store with a lot of selections. I was hoping to find something like... may be there is something out there that i am not aware of .

Thanks for your help

Take a walk down Kaufingerstr. Karstadtsport will have them. As will a couple of dedicated sports stores just off Marienplatz on the way to Sendlingerstr.

Bigger grocery stores, yes, lots. Across the road from me on Elsenheimerstr is a Hit supermarket...it's ginormous by comparison to your local Tenglemann type thing. There are lots more around the city too. Hit, Walmart, etc, etc.

Karstadt sport as said by keydeck. They have a fairly good selection and different price ranges. Sportschek of somat around marienplatz also. Check Hertie next to Hauptbahnhof as well.

Hi Jaynes,

To pick up a simple bag quickly, I'd just head to either the sports store near the Rathaus or to the top floor of Kaufhof, the department store on Marienplatz (the square at the Rathaus). I'm assuming that they will be staying huts and that the sleeping bag doesn't actually have to be good for -25° or anything.

As for big grocery stores, they are about, but usually a bit out of town, so it's best to let us know what part of town you are in so we can direct you the right way. There are 2 fairly large supermarkets in the mezzanine at Rosenheimer Platz S-Bahn station. One is Aldi, the famous discount brand store, the other is Hit, more upmarket and a bigger selection.

Kaufingerstr is the big pedestrian shopping street from Marienplatz. Click Maps at the top of this page to see more.

Kaufingerstrasse is the large pedestrian street between Marienplatz and Karlsplatz (Stachus). You can go there with any U-bahn or S-bahn that stops in any of those two stations, i.e. U6, U3, U5, and all S-bahns. KarstadtSport is just next to the Karslplatz Station; Hertie is also outside Karlsplatz, but on the other side of the road.

If your daughter is staying in an alpine hut, she doesn't need (in fact, probably isn't allowed) a 'normal' sleeping bag, but instead needs a sheet sleeping bag. I'm sure you can get these from the afore-mentioned sports stores; if not, the Alpen Verein (alpine club) sell them -- their shop is above the C&A nearest Hbf.

A hiking trip sounds like sleeping outside or in tents to me.

I am a youth leader and that is what we do with our kids. So if she is one of those who gets cold easily I would invest a little more money and get an all season one just in case.

Also bear in mind she'll have to carry it all day so not best to go for a bulky one.

Well, camping is prohibited in large swathes of the Alps, and all hiking trips that I've been on in the Alps have involved staying in huts -- why camp when the youth rate at a hut is just €3? Jaynes will have to ascertain what type of sleeping bag is required. If they are camping outside in the mountains in autumn, then it can't be "Nothing fancy but a simple one" -- it needs to be a good one.
Purple Muffin
Yes it is prohibited but that does not mean that people do not do it. Do not be fooled I am sure some parents would have a fit if they knew what went on sometimes tongue.gif

I lead a scout group and we camp well because that is what scouts do biggrin.gif

Yep camping in autumn definitely needs a good one and as I said think about weight/bulk for what she has to carry.
