Gärtnerplatz tips - Glockenbachviertel

Glamour article on this 'trendy' area of Munich

Gärtnerplatz is situated in the Glockenbachviertel, an area of Munich known to be favoured by homosexuals and by all for going out in, shopping at the 'gay-friendly' shops and hairdressers (look out for the little rainbow flags in the shop windows!) and also to live in. Apparently Freddie Mercury used to live in the GBV. Controversially, this area is now becoming 'young, hip and trendy', with more and more heterosexuals moving in.

Gärtnerplatz is actually a roundabout where Klenzestrasse, Corneliusstrasse and Reichenbachstrasse meet. There are benches, stretches of grass and flowerbeds as well as a fountain in the middle, so you often see sunbathers catching a few rays. The Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz is the well-known state theatre.

There are many street festivals in the Glockenbachviertel (also known as GBV) including the Gaertnerplatzfest, Klenzestrassenfest, Hans-Sachs-Strassenfest etc.

It was recently featured in Glamour magazine where they said the following about it (rough translation):

QUOTE
Gaertnerplatz is like the 'best of Munich'; stars like Robbie Williams and Julia Stegner share the cafes and bars with the locals on their days off, or go shopping in the boutique 'Slips' (who also sell Diane von Fuerstenberg dresses).
  • Secret tip: go to the fountain in the middle of a sea of flowers on a first date.
  • 'Glamour' tip: The new club "M.C. Mueller" (Fraunhoferstr 2) - DJane Corinna and tasty burgers!
  • What to wear: The Gaertnerplatz posse prefers to wear jeans that business clothes, as well as sunglasses and a smile!

Nice Robbie pic. biggrin.gif I live in Glockenbach and have to say that it is a great place to go out at night and wander around during the day. Great variety of places to eat, drink and of course shop shop shop. My husband (I can now say that as I am now married), also has a fashion studio here, so we get to meet a lot of great people... And I have to say that its not as GAY as what people think, so come out and have fun... Only wish I got to see Robbie rolleyes.gif

A friend of mine lives in that neighborhood and while it is beautiful, and has some nice shops...it has its fair share of shop windows with studded thongs in them as well. wink.gif

As does Sydneys Oxford St and Paddington, Londons Soho, New York, LA, San Fran, Rome, Paris, Cologne, Berliin... etc etc, I can name every city around the world...

Its also has shops with Bras in the front window sad.gif ... turn a blind eye to it and welcome to Glockenbach...

To be honest if it wasnt for this fun, trendy outragous village atmosphere I wouldnt be living in Germany. PS visit Cooperative Cafe I think that have the best (and healhy food) in Germany along with great bar staff, I always hang out there and take all my freinds visiting from whereever there to eat.

There's also a vegan restaurant in the GBV near Gärtnerplatz on Müllerstr but I forgot the name. It's closer towards Sendlinger Tor.

Pedant Corner!

The legal entity is Stadtbezirk 2 with the name "Isarvorstadt-Ludwigsvorstadt" which stretches from Isartor/Vicky Market in a U shape before ending up at the South side of the Hbf.

Within the Bezirk there are clearly identifiable areas:

* Gärtnerplatzviertel which is NORTH of Fraunhoferstrasse.
* Glockenbachvieterl which is SOUTH of Fraunhoferstrasse but NORTH of the Kapuzinerstrasse.
* Schlachthofviertel which is SOUTH of Kapuzinerstrrasse but NORTH of the railway.
* The Krankenhaus Areal which is the central hospital campus and some lawyers offices etc.
* The Bahnhofsvieterl which is the south side of the station with fabulous Turkish grocers and electronics shops etc.

So GBV isn't part of Gärtnerplatzvieterl and VV though the terms are often used interchangably. smile.gif

End Pedant Corner.

Thanks for that explanation there. I didn't realise that there was a Gärtnerplatzviertel. I demand a new addition for my profile then so I can change my 'where I live' bit!

The local community centre called the Glocknbachwerkstatt is actually in Gärtnerplatzviertel though that mway een be in Bezirk 1 as the boundary is a big jaggedy along the western edge and the most westerly bit of the Müllerstrasse, west of Pestalozistrasse isn't in the Viertel at all and has a different postcode too.

Confuzzled yet? wink.gif
