Travel from Munich to Stuttgart

Advice on the best options - i.e. rail or car hire

I have friends doing the Europe trip, and stopping into Munich.

They fly out of Stuttgart and intend to get there by train. Looking up the BahnAG? site, seems like the cost for 2 tickets (Munich to Stuttgart) will be about 78euros.

Does that seem right? Anyplace to go for cheap tickets, or other ideas on how to travel to Stuttgart? They are dropping off their rental car before they get to Munich.

Thanks!

With Car:
The Airport in Stuttgart is directly on the A8. If you drive allow for lots of xtra time as that entire length of A8 is
a huge construction zone, thus lots of long staus.

Train: (M to S / then xfer at S Hbf onto Sbahn to Airport)
Looking at the DB website, shows that a normal RT price to Stuttgart Flughafen from Munich Hbf. is around 69 Eur
if you buy ealry enough and get the discount tix (With Restrictions) Full price RT tix are 92 Eur.

The price of 78 Eur RT, seems normal depending on the days you plugged into the search as travel days.
With DB, the best tix your going to get for normal travel on ICE and other fast trains is 69-92 Eur. Unless you plan on going
on a weekend then get a Schones Wochende Tix (Which limits you to slow trains) your not gonna get a better
deal on DB.

Thanks. I'm new... can't wait until I dont have to say that.

But until then, what's the 'DB' site??

The website used to lookup timetables and pricing.

DB only offer discounted tickets on return journeys, so if your friends are only travelling one way then there are no discounts, apart from the Schones Wochenende ticket that DK mentioned. However, this is only valid on slow trains (not ICE, IC or EC trains) and only at the weekend or on public holidays.

The price to Stuttgart Airport is €49 using ICE or €43 with the not-quite-as-comfortable but (strangely) marginally faster IC. This is reasonably priced as well as quick and comfortable, so I strongly recommend taking the train.

train, its so much easier than driving and car rental. The prob with car rental is if you return to another outlet, you tend to pay more for that. Train is easy, is one at least every hour.

Arr - train (the iron horse!) No changin' straight through to Stuttgart.

take the slow train & get the Schönes Wochenende ticket (for example). it's only 4-5 hours one way and costs maybe 35 EUR for up to 5 people. Or go with Mitfahrzentrale. That's the cheapest way & it's a good alternative to travelling cheap.

Try the Euraide office in the Hauptbahnhof. They are at the "rear" of the International Press.

I got our tickets for the train to Stuggart at the start of September for the Irish game. They cost 180€ for 5 of us 1st class while DB website were quoting 300€+ for 2nd class
