LizFox - The key is learning German - and it is HARD.
Vocabulary is something to concentrate on.
You will miss out if you do not have a good basic knowledge!
Discover why you say "Ich ruf dich an"! (I'll call you)
(Horrible separable verb "anrufen" - to call - but split into two and reversed - ruf ...an)
But a profession/trade is a Beruf (calling..)
And an answering machine is an "Anrufsbeantworter" (Call answerer).
The "Ruf"(call) is there - which also means "reputation"!

Hey everyone,

I am a student from America living here in Hamburg for the summer doing an internship and training at a rowing club. The city is great and have had lots of fun so far. Eurcup was amazing. But alas, it gets a bit lonely at times as my Deutsch is mediocre at best and so meeting new people is a challenge. Would love to come to some of these "meets". Speaking with native-english speakers would be good fun.
cheers

Thank you so much everyone for the warm welcome and the excellent language tips! I am really looking forward to getting to spend some fun times in Hamburg with you all!
See you in August,
Liz

Hi,

I'm from Montreal, Canada (24 years old and newly graduated) and I'm moving to Hamburg October 1 to study German at Colon. This will be my first time in Germany and Europe in general. Hopefully, I'll love it and hope to meet some of you!

By the way, Lani, just wanted to say that I absolutely ADORE Montreal :-)
Steph0313
I am a Montrealer. Lani what part of the city you from? (Tip - Bring Bagels because you won't find anything like Montreal Bagels anywhere else biggrin.gif )

I think it's about time we had another proper TT meet-up. There seem to have been a few more younger people who have just joined this forum! Anyway, in the meantime, welcome to Hamburg all of you!
Antoine
Sternschanze is where it's at. Some of us are having a couple of drinks for Tam's (infrequent TT poster) leaving do tonight. Meeting 10h30 Simpel bar Schulterblatt, then moving on next door to Haus 73.

Noel
Hi everyone! smile.gif

I am new in Toytown. I am moving this end of year to HH with my boyfriend. I am currently living in Los Angeles, CA. But since he is german we decided to live together in Germany. I am european too and been in the States for 6 years. I am 32. Working in the fashion management field. Also experienced in other fields as English and Yoga teaching.
I lived in Europe and South America before and I think is very important be part of the community as soon as you move into a new place.
I would love to get in touch with english/spanish/italian speakers! smile.gif And I am sure will be in one of the meet ups you guys organize frequently!
Drop me a line when you have a chance.
Thank you all and I hope to meet you soon!
Noel. wink.gif
Kay
Welcome to Toytown. Hope you'll have a hassle-free move to Hamburg. smile.gif
mlovett
Welcome!

Anch'io parlo italiano, y castellano también.

Perhaps we will meet at a TT event. Seems most folks are in the south, but more and more are moving to HH.

good luck with the move... I too came from CA (Bay Area), and it took 3 months for our container ship to arrive. just a friendly warning. Oh, and lilplatinum's container SANK en route to HH. Get good insurance! wink.gif
robinson100
Always one to cheer us up, our M!
mlovett
Sorry... I had a really rough evening. I shouldn't post when feeling this way.

But hey, isn't knowing the truth better than being in the dark?? wink.gif
robinson100
the two are not mutually exclusive!!
;-)
mlovett
I'm just bitter that all the happenin' events are in Munich. Sure, we have stitch and bitch... but I am apparently only good at the latter, LOL. And there are some American football games with the young guys... don't think the hubby would approve. To top it off, we don't have Oktoberfest. WHAAAHH!!!

But hey, we have cool ships and... uh... stuff. tongue.gif
Noel
Thank you all for the replies!
Makes me feel better since I going through a lot of stress with this moving sad.gif

Cheers from Venice Beach! smile.gif
See you guys at some meet up...!

To top it off, we don't have Oktoberfest. WHAAAHH!!!

That is not necessarily a bad thing when you read all the whinging about having to bribe waitresses, so-called security etc.

Life is pretty OK up here (except at the moment with torrential rain - which is why its all green here...)

USCTrojan
Hey,

welcome to TT!!! I'm from LA as well smile.gif .

If I were you I would wait with the move until April. Trust me, the winter weather here is very depressing. Oooops...now I am being negative too. unsure.gif

Feel free to message me when you get here...
Noel
Hi HEM.
Well, for what I know I wouldnt mind changing some rain (which I havent seen here in California in a while...!) for better quality of life and different lifestyle....
Is so hot tonight....My car marked 107 degrees today! Just crazy..... blink.gif
Noel
Hi Trojan...I spent last winter there.... and is cold and windy but I am sick of being here! Need a change!!! smile.gif And better food!!!! pleeeeeeease!!!
USCTrojan
Yeah...I was sick of LA too when I moved here, but now I miss Cali a lot. sad.gif

But life in Germany is def more stable and the quality of life is much higher. Plus you don't have to deal with LA traffic. wink.gif
Noel
Hey Trojan:
I will definitely contact you when I get there! smile.gif
Cheers from Cali!
Noel
Thanks for the tips smile.gif
I am so excited to go you have no idea! I am already looking for jobs and such... We'll see..... Cant wait to be there!
mlovett
You two just picked the wrong part of Cal... I hate LA. I'm from San Diego, moved to San Francisco for the better political views. wink.gif Well, and for ALL the views!

Now please stop telling us about the wonderful fall CA weather; do you want me to cry? LOL
HEM

As the locals say: there is no bad weather; just bad clothing.

Its currently bucketing down....
mlovett
It's true... my son and I need more rain clothing! I remember when I went to northern Cal from San Diego. All I owned was a Levi jacket, and it gets COLD up there! ALso, flip flops weren't going to cut it year round, either. LOL

HEM, no rain at the moment in the Heide. wink.gif
CaliforniaCrocus
Welcome to HH. I'm from Sacto. Been here in this weather for 7 years. I kinda like it now. But don't ask me how I like it in February because by then I'll have had enough.

If you feel that there is nothing on offer for you in your area, why not stop bitching about it and make something happen!
Nothing that you like will just appear out of nowhere, and everything has to be started by SOMEBODY!!
So, get out there and organise SOMETHING M , and you might just find that there are others out there like you who have also felt left out ´cos everything happens "down here" - hey, you could even organise a trip to München (God forbid!!), and come and meet some of us people who have such a better life...!!!
mlovett
I will get to Bavaria as often as I can, believe me. If husband won't take time off, maybe I'll just have to go by myself. Or with the kiddo. I need to teach Jr how to ski, anyway. smile.gif

Sorry if the bitching has been unbearable. Dealing with some serious health issues and other stuff (kid is getting assessed by psych's). It just wasn't the best time to move across continents. wink.gif

So, when does the ski season officially start down there?... I can send some of our rain down there, if y'all need some snow, heh heh.
HEM

You might find it worth looking towards Norway/Sweden for skiing (could be closer as the vulture flies).
mlovett
hmm... I always think of them more as cross-country skiers rather than downhillers. I will have to do some Googling. Maybe it's time to put on the Thule box and head north. I believe they even allow off-roading, another sport of mine.
miwild
Skiing and Snowboarding in Lower Saxony´s Harz mountains ...
mlovett
Ah yes, thanks for the reminder about the Harz. I was there years ago (fell in love with their local rocket fuel, Schierker Feuerstein). The mountains are not nearly as high as what I am used to (California's Sierra Nevada, and Utah), but that is probably better for teaching a 4 year old how to ski... smile.gif And the savings on fuel for my gas guzzler!! haha. I'd still love to see fjords in Norway, though.
popfiction
Welcome to Hamburg to everyone who is new! Hope to see you at some of the events or meet-ups organised on the forum!
RainKing
The downhill possibilities in the Harz are very limited - OK for a day or a weekend trip. The cross country skiing there can be fantastic - but the Harz doesn't always get snow. Two years ago they had none all winter. Mostly, if you live in HH, you have to book a skiing trip to the Alps or somewhere.

.. currently i am sitting at home doing nothing.

Big mistake - get your coat on (thats these heavy rain-proof things we wear a lot here but are not needed in California) & get out & about.
You are aware that tomorrow Friday is a national holiday in Germany I hope....
mlovett
haha, HEM! Yep, we put our coats on and built a big fort today. brrrr! Nothing beats getting muddy to a 4 year old boy.
Missing_CaLi

its so cold here

This is cold? Wait until it goes down to -20C with low humidity (hasn't happened for a few years) with the possibility of the Alster freezing over...

Maybe you should describe why/what you are doing here. your interests, sports, general location and that might raise the chances of someone making contact. I'm almost 3 times your age so no help there smile.gif
Noel
Good morning all! smile.gif Well... i might say evening.....
Dont worry Robinson, I will organize trips to the south when I get there, since I've never been anywhere south.

Lots of californians eh? Well, after been here for 6 years I guess I am little californian too wink.gif hehe!
Can someone (yes, I need a favour smile.gif could send me info about good gyms there?? I researched and they are all in german. May be they can have activities such as volleyball indoors or similar since I wont be doing it outdoors I guess.... anymore...

Thank you!

A presto tutti!

If you are looking for gyms in Hamburg you should indicate which area of Hamburg you live in as distances can be considerable.

Surprise. Could this be because we are in...

... they are all in german. ...

Culture shock, phase 1. While some Germans speak English, most speak/read/think German. I know this is obvious, but it's somehow hard to absorb when you're actually here. Willkommen in Deutschland Mädel!

Tell us what part of the city are you in, that'll help people help you with gyms.
