Rostock? Bloody hell... that's a bit extreme. I have no definite plans for tomorrow yet, so PM me if you still intend on coming to Hamburg.

Hi,

I am coming up to my sixth week working in Hamburg and I am starting to find the social scene somewhat boring. I say this because its hard to go out with out a German mate and make friends. Anyone want to meet up to go clubbing or just see the sights?

I am a 25 yo from Australia and I am in need of some english/US/Aussie culture!

Cheers
Rob1989
So does anyone fancy doing something this weekend?
tor
i'd be up for a beer and food. also the pub quiz on sunday.
Rob1989
I should be at the pub quiz, and beer and food sounds great - maybe Kemps as I haven't been there yet.

Trying to be out as much as possible this weekend - there's a 6 week old in the house. It makes a lot of noise.
Mark Aussie
Hamburgers!

I'm an Aussie, 23 years old and I moved to Hamburg 6 weeks ago to play hockey, travel and work a bit. It was an opportunity to do something after I finished my studies and am really enjoying it so far. I'll be in Hamburg until November, I really enjoy playing any sport, so if anyone wants someone to play anything, tennis, squash, beer drinking, golf, whatever or to just go for a run, let me know. Also is there anywhere that shows the super 14 rugby and especially the rugby internationals? I like football but its on 24/7!
Its always good to have some more english speaking friends here so drop me a line.

Cheers

Mark
tor
Welcome to Hamburg Mark.

How about Saturday? something to eat and then Kemps?
Mark Aussie
Sorry tor, i'm pretty busy all weekend with hockey, maybe we can go for a beer midweek next week, i'll have either Monday or Wednesday free.

I can find out tonight and let you know if you like?

Hey all,
I'm a 25-yr-old Aussie moving from Berlin to Hamburg for work in June. Definitely interested in hanging out with other English-speakers when I settle in there, but for the moment I'd be really grateful of any hot tips about WGs, transport, or anything else you think I should know before moving there. Thanks, and I'll definitely be up for the trivia team and any weekend sport going on (netball, soccer, whatever) as of June.

Hi all,

I am living in Hamburg since last year and I found it difficult to get to know people socially, mostly I suppose because I don’t speak German ( I am planning to take classes at Colon, following your recommendations ! ). I am never really bored because I always found things to do, especially now since we have moved in a new flat, but I would love to make some friends…

Before moving here, I have worked on cruise ships and got to interact a lot with Americans and English speaking people in general. I gave that up to move here where I was offered an interesting job and where my German boyfriend lives. I love the city and surroundings and after travelling quite a lot I can say Hamburg is one of my favorite cities in the world.

I would be glad to meet up with people, go out for drinks or so, change ideas, go for movies, have some fun… I miss that the most ! Anyone living close to St. Pauli? Anyone going to some sports club in that area? Maybe at the Fitness Company next to Central Train Station?

Cheers !

Gioia
Did I say St. Pauli ? I meant St. Georg. lol

Hiya, everyone. I've been in HH for just a couple months now, recently of Toronto, and I have had the pleasure of getting to know a few TTers already, through the good ol' facebook machine. Lots of great people here! I am impressed, and looking forward to getting involved, meeting interesting people and making new and meaningful connections. Plus, it's good to get a break from the constant and sometimes overwhelming flow of German into my brain.
I completed a associateship at the Ontario College of Art & Design in 2001, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, studying Drawing and Painting {major}, Art History, & English, which I just finished last autumn. One thing I am missing since I arrived is the presence of an arts community here. In T.O. most Thursday nights throughout the year you could hit a half dozen gallery openings without breaking a sweat, get a real culture injection, have some beers and even just hang out. I haven't been here long enough or had the time to figure the scene out here, so if anyone has a clue, or knows of something interesting to check out, count me in!
This summer is going to be great.
Girl
Hi, I'm a married 26 year-old . My Husband is German but I was born and raised in the Americas, I've been here for nearly a year an a half though haven't really met anyone that comes from my side of the world or understands it...I was wondering if there's anyone out there who is and would like to hang out?
Cheers!

Hello Girl,

Welcome to Toytown. You might find the best way to connect and meet new friends is to join some of the groups.

There are game nights and afternoons, book swaps, picnic meet-ups and many other things. There is always someone new and everyone is very welcoming. So don't be shy and come out and meet some other TT. biggrin.gif
HEM
Hamburg is large - you might like to indicate (in profile maybe) the general area where you live...

As a tip for this Friday see the thread "Japanisches Kirschblütenfest at the Alster Lake, Fireworks at 10:30pm, Friday 30.May 2008"

Hi Girl,

I'm from England and have been here for 6 weeks now. I love the place but cannot find work which is the only thing that is gettng me down! I have moved here with my partner who works for Airbus. I must admit I have found it difficult to meet people to. I'm trying to teach myself German which is challenging! I'm also 26 and live in Iserbrook. Is this anywhere near you? If you would like to meet up for a coffee and a chat get in touch. I'm sure you will be able to tell me more about Hamburg.

Leila
Girl
Oh, wow! didn't expect to get answers so fast, thanks guys (girls). Well I was living in Winterhude but moved to the Barmbek area...I'll be moving again hopefully by the end of the year but I think we'll stay in this part of town (Stadtpark neighbourhood). Anyway, I would totally like to get together for a coffee, dinner, etc. I checked your game gathering but the hours I work can be a little random sometimes so this next one I won't be able to attend...I'll keep checking, perhaps I'll find something in the future. But, I'm free this Saturday and Sunday (so far), if you're available too; send me an e-mail and we'll figure out something.
-Looking forward to meeting you!

Hi, I have just moved to Hamburg, in Eimsbüttel, with my German husband. I am 26 and from Malta.
I am also interested in meeting English speakers in Hamburg.

Hope to hear from you smile.gif
Girl
Ok, so tomorrow I'll let you all know where and when. Have a good night!
Hammonia
For the girls: we're going to meet at Streit's cinema on Saturday May 31st at 7:30 p.m. to watch "Sex and the City" in English.
Feel free to join us, you just have to get your own tickets now as I already finished the reservations.
So far we are 21 girls of all kinds of descent, think age is something between 20 and 45 or so... smile.gif
We'll be going out for cocktails lateron as well. Check out the thread here.

For everybody: try one of our games nights, there's lots of new people at the moment, so don't be shy.

On Friday 30th after the cherry blossom fireworks a few of us will be at Finnegan's Wake for Karaoke and a few beers - feel free to join us, it'll be easy to find us wink.gif (and singing is NOT a must!).
A friend of mine will also be there, he's from Toronto and lives in Barmbek... *grin*
Girl
Ok, so there's a place called "Bagel Park" inside Europa Passage (second floor) by Mönkebergstraße. We can meet there Saturday at around 1pm. If you want to try somewhere else we can work something out. Let me know if it works for you.
Cheers!
filteringfields
hey that sounds great... I sometimes go to the bagel park on grindelallee by the uni, the bagels are always chewie, reminds me of montreal. I generally stay away from malls, but I won't make any judgements about the europa passage until I have been there smile.gif 1 pm sounds great!!

Hammonia,

What train station is nearest to the Cherry Blossom fireworks?
Hammonia
That would be Dammtor for S-Bahn, and Stephansplatz for U-Bahn.
Amyy
Found Hamburg so far to be a really nice city. Hate not having a job though!! Difficult without being able to speak German.

What kind of work are you looking for?

I'm gong to try and stop by to say hi to everyone on Saturday. I haven't met any new people in a while smile.gif
filteringfields
So Saturday aft is a fersure thing and still good for everyone? Hope so. I'm looking forward to it. Come one, come all!
Leila.m
Thanks Hammonia, think I will get down there tonight. Should be a warm night judging by the weather today.

I feel exactly the same Amyy!! I moved here as my boyfriend got a secondment with his job- it was a joint decision to come, no regrets but it is hard not working. My savings are beginning to dwindle now. I have found that German is a must. I'm trying teach myself (challenging!!), I did do it for GCSE so it is all coming back to me now, i just need to get more motivated.

I've been visisting a few playgroups that teach German kids English, I get on with kids great but i don't understand what they are saying to me in German therefore i do not feel confident enough to take charge of a group myself. Most companies I have found advertising jobs want a good command of German (which is only right) so again until my German is better I do not feel confident enough to apply for these jobs.

Hopefully i will find something soon x
Amyy
Good luck Leila. I have 2 interviews this weekend for horse riding teaching jobs!! I, personally don't think I speak enough German to do this, but my boyfriend thinks it'll be Ok and the guys interviewing know I dont speak that much and they are still interviewing me. I find that a bit weird. Guess we will see...
Ive been to school for a bit at Colon and they were really good, but like you the savings are dwindling so have stopped now. If you can afford even 1 month its worth it, 'cos you have no choice other than to think and speak german for 4 hours in a day!!!

Girl
So far it's just me and Filteringfields, perhaps Chitown as well. Anyone else? I'll check by tomorrow (Sat) before 9am one last time.
MrNosey
There were some questions about the Stadtteile of Hamburg. You can find an overview at this website.
ChiTown
I feel like shopping, so I'll be downtown anyway. Look forward to meeting you all smile.gif
tiffany082
Unfortunately I won't be able to come today. We have to move the rest of our furniture sad.gif
Hope to meet you all another time.
Have fun!!
filteringfields
I really enjoyed meeting you all, I hope we can get a plan together sometime soon!
@ girl- Let me know when you guys are back from your away mission.
We will definitely have to figure something out for then! Maybe Chi can be convinced as well smile.gif
Leila.m
Hope your interviews went well or good luck if you they are still to come Amy.

I am visiting a school tomorrow- hopefully there may be something on offer... still practicing the German!!
Amyy
Hi Leila
Interviews were fine and so Ive got 1 if not 2 jobs coming up now!! Good luck at the school tomorrow, Im sure you'll find something soon. x
Girl
Who's up for drinks this Saturday night (the 14nth)?
Marie-Anne
On top of the drinks, Saturday there is also the picnic which is planed. If you guys want to meet even more people.

Not sure if I'll be up for drinks on the 14th, will think about it though. I would enjoy meeting some more people around here. But have not had a quiet weekend in a long while.
Girl
Yeah but Saturday my hubby has a midday marathon and the weather forecast is not good so far...picnic doesn't sound too great indoors...maybe next time the sun is out...?
USCTrojan
Hi there,

I moved here from Los Angeles and signed up, because I haven't met any Americans here yet. So, I'm starting to get a bit homesick. You guys seem to be a fun crowd, so hopefully I will have a chance to meet all of you at events etc. ... I never thought there was such a big English speaking community in Hamburg. Very exciting... smile.gif
Gioia
hi there,

Anyone for meeting up today or over the week-end? If you feel going out for a drink or in a club somewhere dancing, just drop a line.

Cheers

Hi. My name is Elizabeth, I am a Kindergarten teacher from the states and in August I will be moving to Hamburg with my husband, while he participates in a law school study abroad semester (September-January) at Bucerius Law School.

I am nervous because we don’t speak German, but at least we have a place to live! We will be living in the Alsterdorf area; and because David will be in school I am trying to find work teaching English, babysitting, or doing anything that keeps my mind alive and my schedule busy!

I am so excited to have found Toytown and to have found this great way of meeting new people. It will be great to get to know you guys better. I enjoy all things in life and it is always fun to try new things; but I truly love working out, seeing movies, drinking coffee, going out, dancing, talking to new people, spending time with children (I know I truly am a teacher through and through) and I love shopping. I really hope to meet some of you with similar interests who can show me the ropes in Hamburg.

See you in August--
Elizabeth
Mapleleafdude
