Hi All,

I'm new to this site and was very pleased to finally find a useful website. I'm planning to move to Darmstadt after the first of the year (jan 07) and need advice on where to look for jobs for English speakers. My German is very basic at best. My boyfriend lives in Darmstadt (he's German) so I don't have to worry about finding an apartment.

I've been an executive assistant for many, many years and would really like the opportunity to work in Germany. Any help anyone can give would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks for your advice and ideas.

As you know, Darmstadt is around 25km south of Frankfurt. See also the other chat topic: job searching in Frankfurt - there might be some info in there that is equally applicable to Darmstadt.

Hi and welcome,

My boyfriend lives in Darmstadt too biggrin.gif

Do you have German citizenship? As I think the bigger hurdle might be getting a work permit as opposed to not being fluent in German. Also assistant jobs sometimes demand excellent level of English so this is certainly an advantage.

What I think you need to do is work on your German to get it up to a decent level. This will not be too hard if you have a German boyfriend - make sure he speaks to you in German! Even if it is only basics things to start off with like asking you what you want to drink, what the time is etc. This will get you used to speaking German everyday. Ok so you are not going to be able to communicate fluently overnight but I think if you go to an interview and can at least communicate in German to some level it shows that you are commited to staying here and willing to learn. I think this could only do you good in an interview.

Good luck and let us know how you get on biggrin.gif

Darmstadt has 2 'institutions' which are very heavily English speaking, ESOC (European Space Operations Centre) and Eumetsat. The only way of actually getting a job there is through one of the many companies who actually work there, a staff members job is very difficult to obtain. I only know of one company, Serco, who are at both but I do know EDS are coming in early next year as well. There are also a lot of software companies where a number of English people work, such as Software AG, look in the Darmstädter Echo or Frankfurter Rundschau for jobs.

Hello. We are moving to Germany in late 2008. Looking for resources for English speaking jobs. Our German is Basic at best, hoping to improve before arrival. Wife is RN in US and my work experience is vast, primarily business and sales focused. If you could please recommend a web site or classified that has listings of opportunities.
Thanks!

Just be aware that the Darmstadt and Hanau bases will be closed in a couple of months.

Try englishlanguagejobs.com or eurolondon...I got answers back from both when I was searching for a job here in Germany. If you are a good writer, your english will come in handy here for tech companies. Most will help you get a work pemit, too...especially if you are from the USA. Give it about a month, and you should receive answers and interviews. It seems that employers who need english language skills can be rather lenient when it comes to your German knowledge, but it is a good idea to be honest about your abilities and be up-front. It has been my experience that the Germans are very impressed by foreigners who show interest in living and working here, as well as learning their language and will assist you in these endeavors. As far as Darmstadt goes...I don't know...I love here, but I always planned on working in Frankfurt. It's very international and there are many opportunities there. Viel Glück!

another good one is www.jobpilot.de

in the search field you can specifically bring up job ads that are only written in English. It's very helpful, that's how I found my job.
