Public outdoor swimming pools now closed

Summer is officially over despite the hot weather

Sometimes you have to wonder... A great weather week and the public swimming pools are closed... Not that they bother to inform anyone. Having been going regularly to one nearby I went along this afternoon expecting it to be open as did half the neighbourhood by the looks of it - and no - firmly closed automatic entry posts ripped out and water being drained... It would have been really nice if they had bothered to either

a) put in their SWIM brochure or
b) put a notice up at the entry last week to forewarn people

but no - that's it summer is officially over... no more lazing by the pool days...

Perhaps it didn't occur to anyone that there are adults as well as children who like to use the pool and that September can be one of the warmer and better months of the year in Europe... ( well something has to make up for our dreadful Munich August!)

Rant over...

Did anyone else have this problem?

Heard about it this morning on the radio...they announced that despite the good weather they would keep all public pools closed as decided at the beginning of the summer...

Dont you just love the fexibility of the Germans sometimes huh.gif

The closure only applies to the Freibäder.
Many enclosed pools have outside areas, check the SWM M-Bäder site for details.

Sorry, I have no sympathy for you. The outdoor pools always close the week school begins. If you don't know that, it's your own fault, not theirs. I'd say 95% of their guests know that, so putting up a sign to say that is just extra work.
Chicago
yea, putting up a little sign IS just too much work. in fact, since everyone already knows the name of the street that they live and work on, there is no need for street signs. let's take those down too. 95% of the people who need to know that already do, and it is just too much work to maintain them. tongue.gif

Having worked in a swimming pool, I know the work isn't from putting up the sign, but the smart-ass responses that you would get because of it. Exhibit A above. wink.gif

Does this mean the use of anti-stink sprays in TT will rise ohmy.gif , and /or facemasks. Glad I got a shower in my place. wink.gif

I think it's crap they're not keeping the public informed too. If they close, then they close. They should at least publish this info on the premises in advance.

they announced it on the radio and it was in the local rag. What do you expect a personal telegramm to inform you?

flexibility is one thing but you have to be able to plan staff for the pool and make sure you have a Bademeister there. They don't just sit at home the rest of year waiting for a phone call on a sunny day to come in and work at the Freibad.

The closing dates for the Freibäder were fixed at the beginning of the Freibadsäson, ie when they opened the Freibäder, they also stated when they were open to. People have had all summer to inform themselves. Its their own stupid fault if they didn't.

They even posted it on their web-site, once on the page for each Freibad like here:

http://www.swm.de/de/produkte/mbaeder/somm.../ungererbad.htm

and once in the "Aktuelles" section informing people the Freibäder were shutting.

The Dantebad is open, I went there yesterday. They have several outdoor pools, some of which are heated up to 24 degrees (during winter up to 34 degrees). It is a Freibad but stays open year-round. The closest U-Bahn stations are Gern and Westfriedhof. If you are using other public transport, check www.mvv-muenchen.de on how to get there.
Here's a link to the Dantebad: http://www.ganz-muenchen.de/freizeitfitnes...armfreibad.html.

Have fun biggrin.gif
Chicago
so Fran, yea, these things do happen here. As with any city, there is an entire body of "local knowledge" that one has to get acquainted with. For instance, last year I was going to the Olympia park pool very frequently. then one day I went and the whole thing was closed (due to renovation, which is still continuing (pool is open, but building renovations continue)). Perhaps there were signs posted to warn me of the impending closure, but I didn't see them. So now I try to check their website before every visit, which isn't very often anymore.

well, you could just start by reading the website. not too difficult to understand even for those with only a little knowledge of the language.

The Thereme in Erding is also still open (Open Year round Actually)

There's a Dante Sommerbad and a Dante Winterbad.
The Sommerbad is the big field with all pools open and the Winterbad is the sauna, Erlebnisbad and Stadion sections only, these bits are open all year around when the other pools are drained.
Which means that those who like to can swim outside in winter nekkid as well (well in the sauna bit).
The pools are heated.
In any case, they are closing for renovations - winter schedule starts on September 19th.
Don't forget to use the main entrance, not the summer one nearest to Gern U-Bahn.
Nordbad is open and they have a grassy bit next to the outside pool.

i'd have to agree with Showem. Yes, it sucks to go hoping to swim on a nice day, but the schedule is set before the season even starts in the Spring. Generally, the schedule is more or less the same from year to year.
As someone else pointed out the pool needs to be staffed (as well as maintained for safety) and lifeguards don't just chill at home for hopes of nice weather to go in to work. (actually, by this time of year they probably don't want to see you for a few days/weeks after dealing with you and others for long intense days on end).

So, not fun and a big let down, but it makes sense that pools would close when school is starting up again.

I do agree they could've posted a sign. At the pools i've worked at and supervised even when dates are printed well in advance the last week or two before the end of the season (for the summer only pools) we posted signs.

I'm looking forward to a nice day at the Wies'n on 4th October! cool.gif

I had been to this pool near Haar this weekend.. never bothered to check the name of the pool or the street. Went there with a couple of my friends about two months back and have been a regular since then. This place is almost empty most of the time but this weekend it was bloody crowded. Thirty odd people swimming in all possible directions in a 50 m pool. Now I know the reason why. It was pretty annoying. Couldnt do even half the number of laps I would on any other day mad.gif

Dantebad sounds a goodie - thanks for that

Obviously I don't listen to the 'right' radio programs or read the correct local rag as didn't hear or it see it any of those - Not having kids here - the school hols and what it affects are still new to me as this is my first summer. Pity given the unemployment situation here that I do read and hear about cosntantly that no tought is given to offering work to those who need and probably some of their own part time staff would have been happy to have an extra week or so salary if offered the chance. Obviously one can't have unqualified life guards etc but there are plenty of people around at this time of the year who would be happy to earn those pennies...

Still think the odd sign or too could have been good... as I don't go around with my laptop tied to my bod to check sites permanently before I do everything...!!!

I'm pretty sure that Dantebad is completely closed this week for the annual cleaning and renovations (at least that's what I remember seeing on the sign at the door). The Winterbad is meant to be open again on the 18th, and then it'll be open every day from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. all winter.
