Barschwein moving to a bigger premises - Munich

Tengstraße 20, formerly the Twisted Bavarian

There's currently a hand-written piece of paper on the door of the former Twisted Bavarian. It reads:

"Barschwein - Ralph Pelster GmbH"

...with a drawing of a heart pierced by an arrow.

I'm not sure what the heart signifies, if anything. But the name given would suggest that Barschwein, the bar currently at Siegesstraße 19, is either moving to the larger premises or will be opening a second location.

Barschwein is known for having possibly the cheapest drinks in Munich. Just €2 for a Helles.

For the benefit of anyone joining the forum late, the Twisted Bavarian was a Tex-Mex bar that opened in November 2004. It proved very popular with readers of TT but unfortunately had to close around eighteen months later. The "whatever happened to the Twisted Bavarian" discussion is, for reasons not quite clear, the hottest ever topic to have hit the chat forum.

I can testify that Barschwein is cheap and filthy. Might bring a bit of life to that part of Schwabing. Come on bar piggy wiggy.

On closer reading of the website, it can be confirmed that Barschwein will occupy this new premises. Although it's still not totally clear if they are moving or will be running two locations.

I think this move will be the death of Barschwein. I hope I'm wrong, and I hope they don't raise the price of the Helles.

The news mentions a "neues outlet", which to me suggests the running of a second Barschwein.

I don't know about that. Bodega Dali is in the same street and they seem to be doing ok. And Reizbar is around the corner and are still alive...

According to their website, Barschwein seem to be interested in opening a chain all over Germany, their motto being that their drinks are cheap.

Personally, have been there once during the WM, and, except for the dodgy bouncer, found it an ok place for a few drinks.

Great - so I can start stumbling home from that address again

Passed by last week - they are totally gutting the place, should be interesting what they make out of it.

I'd go to Preussen, i.e. north of Odeonsplatz for € 2 helles!

Risky move, I reckon.

They already have one premises in a much better location - closer to Leopoldstrasse near the main drag with better public transport connections. They will need to get a customer base from around Tengstrasse and perhaps a little overflow from their first location. I can see people being curious at first, but gradually drifting back to the original bar if it's easier to get to.

I think if you're going to open a new location, it either needs to be a long way away from the original place or if you're not ideally placed, in a better location.

But I could be wrong of course and the place might boom!!

@Hazza,
Approximately 800m directly South-East from planned would be perfect, although the competition would probably be too hot around there!

But seriously, some friends of mine were in the original the other night when some drugged up drunk stumbled all over the girl, didn't apologise and started a minor ruck.

30 pissed off cops arrived (Pope induced, non-paid overtime) and obviously picked on the Brazilian contingent and not the Druggie.
I've been in the original a couple of times and must admit despite the price, the old Tomate bar was much better!

Oh memories!

I walked past the Barschwein premises the other day and they have completely ripped out the interior - the bar, the panelling, everything. It was just bare concrete walls and floor. Clearly a lot of money is going into building something new.

The place is gorgoeus! Ralph and crew have put their heart and soul into the renovation. I shall put my ego in the back seat and allow truth to ride shot gun. Bar Schwein in The Haus Savoy Keller is far nicer than than the Twisted ever was.

shuffles off sobbing while muttering incoherently to self...

Who's driving? shit! I thought you were!?!

Just found out that Barschwein is a play on words. A piggy-bank in German is a sparschwein. Since this bar is based on saving you on the cost of its drinks, it is barschwein. Amybe you all knew this connection already, but I found it interesting.
