VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict hit out Friday at Canada for allowing same sex marriage and abortion, saying they result from Catholic politicians ignoring the values of their religion.
“In the name of tolerance your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse, and in the name of freedom of choice it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children, the Pope told a group of bishops from Ontario.
Oh the horror! Imagine an entire nation having to cope with all that tolerance and freedom.
That man's values are utterly, utterly repugnant. Talk about institutionalized bigotry. It's shameful.

Has it ever been any different? Not just this man. His predecessors were of the same mindset.
I really cant see mainstream bavarian catholics accepting this sort of thing when he comes here, surely he will have to tone things down, wont he?
On the other hand, if the local bavarian catholics do in fact think along the same lines as him, it would be pretty interesting being there hearing them applause this guy, talk about sending shivers down my spine...
The popes some fag. jesus!
this was not meant to insult people who are homosexual. The word fag was used as cheep humor of little intelligence and should not be taken seriously. I also apologize for potentially grouping anybody with the pope, nobody deserves that

No, the Ami's are blaming us now for selling drugs over the internet (Bush says they are substandard and trying to make it illegal) and illegally bringing fruit into the country!
Well, so the Pope has issues with us now! Fine, we can impose a Visa on him now!

Actually, this Pope is different. Ratboy sent out a message that if any Catholic voted for John Kerry, they would be commiting a sin because Kerry is pro-choice. Ratboy also wrote some of the most repressive prelates in like forever. JP came down on the side of evolution being a part of the divine plan and now ratboy wants to pursue ID and go back on some of the stuff JP did.

Well you can see the result of Canada being so tolerant - what with all the crime and the anarchy in the country. It's obviously so eroded the country as an attractive place to want to live...

I figure the pope has watched other religious fundamentalists sucessfully grab political power and wants a piece of the action. Nothing like insulting an entire nation to grab some headlines -- and invite contempt.
As for the "blame Canada" thing, it comes from a song in a South Park movie and is supposed to be ironic. Canada has a pretty positive image around the world, while the US -- right or wrong -- generally doesn't at this point in time. A very few people actually take it seriously, either because they're jealous or witless. But that's ok, then the joke is on them

The comments to the

It was a tough pick, but this is my favourite:

'They do not see the real threat to their identity in the Christian faith, but in the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom,' he warned.
'This cynicism is not the kind of tolerance and cultural openness that the world's peoples are looking for and that all of us want. The tolerance which we urgently need includes the fear of God - respect for what others hold sacred.'

So everyone has to respect what the church stands for, but of course the catholic church doesn't have to be tolerant towards anyone else.
