Heavy metal music - album suggestions

I have recently been starting to get back into a bit of metal, mostly thrash, and was wondering if anyone has any favs they think are must-hears.

I have been mostly getting into Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax a bit, but have only really heard a few bits and pieces from each. I really like Rust in Peace from Megadeth but found Countdown to Extinction a bit poppy like Metallica. The two albums before Rust in Peace are pretty good too. Oh and I like Slayers Reign in Blood but havent had much of a chance to listen to their others yet.

I have also been checking out other bands like Pantera, Sepultura, Biohazard etc, but havent been digging that as much. Have to listen to them a bit more to see if they grow on me.

I have always been into Black Sabbath but would describe them more as bluesy hard rock. Iron Maiden are ok, they have some good songs and some bad ones.

So, anyone like this sort of sound, and has any kick arse shit to recommend?
SleeplessInMunich
I would recommend Danzig (first 4 albums anyway), but its probably not heavy enough for you. unsure.gif
Kza
Ah yes was thinking of checking them out.
SleeplessInMunich
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Eleanor Rigby
I wouldn't say I'm a metalhead because I prefer my music to still be melodic but I do like it a bit harder.
Stuff I like thats come out somewhat recently: Mudvayne, System of a Down, Disturbed, A Perfect Circle.
Older but still good: Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Rammstein
Kza
Cool some good recommendations there cheers.

Yeah my mp3 program connects to a similar website called last.fm that has that feature too.

Yeah I think I have the wrong impression due to only really hearing their more recent albums, and chart released singles etc. Will definitly be checking out Master of Puppets at least.
Sin
Wish I could be of assistance, but I'm more a fan of Deth Kuntry.

I like this for comparing artists:

and try bullet for my valentine, they're good although more mainstream. very catchy stuff, and they're welsh i think.

interviewer: "So did Metallica really sell out?"
kirk hammett: "Yeah! We've sold out every arena in the last 10 years"
cantthinkofawittyname
Yeh St. Anger was pretty lame compared to their other stuff. They've got a new album coming out soonish, supposed to be more 'old-skool' metallica. Check out the black album too

Here are some not well-known bands/albums I like a lot (some are rather punk/hardcore bands):

Japanese bands:
Dir En Grey
Mucc
Melt Banana, esp.: MxBx 1998/13000 Miles At Light Velocity

G.G Allin
Eagels of Death Metal, esp.:
Peace, Love, Death Metal (not really HM, but very funny.)
Mortician, esp.: Hacked up for Barbecue

Untoten, esp.: Hab keine Angst Veluzifer
Dimmu Borgir

Other Bands:
Apocalyptica
Lard
Napalm Death
Six Feet Under
Mr.Mosh
OH my, I saw Dir En Grey at Rock im Park. The singer was very weird to say the least, I think I saw bits of his lung fly out and he bust open his lip on the microphone (on purpose) and smeared himself in blood.
Good afternoon entertainment at a festival

Zemyna
Capathian Forest. Saw them live at Wacken in 2003. Considered becoming a lesbian after seeing one of the members about naked. Though interestingly enough, there was a marriage proposal in the middle of the set.

Entombed and Napalm Death I also recommend. I tend to like folk or viking metal mostly though.

Marilyn Manson does this all the time.

In Munich the concerts of Dir En Grey are usually overcrowded with fourteen years old gothic lolitas, sigh.

Heh I hope all my google searches for the band names arent triggering any red flags at echelon. Or the mental health service for that matter...

What is heavy metal anyway? I like hard rock. Do you consider System of a Down to be heavy metal? Or hard rock? As to tips, if you like Black Sabbath you might like a very unknown band called "Masters of Reality" (named after the Sabbath LP). My own personal favourites are:
S.O.A.D
Masters of Reality
Marilyn Manson
Trouble
Black Sabbath
None of these I would define as heavy metal though.
Edit: Smashing Pumpkins are kind of nice too.

Foo Fighters

True, thats why I just called the thread metal, and mentioned thrash and some example bands in the post. I think my tastes are more towards the thrash or death style of things. I generally hate anything called "hard rock" but theres some overlap so always going to be exceptions.

Heavy metal music is a bitch to categorise, purely because somebody, somewhere in a darkened room keeps moving the bloody labels about on the pigeon holes.

There was a time when Led Zep, Sabbath, Etc. were classed thus, then somebody took them out of the pigeon hole marked Heavy Metal and moved them across to Classic Rock. A bit like Blondie having the first Punk hit in the UK with 'Denise'. Two years later they had been shifted from Punk via New Wave to Pop.

I always liked to think of the band SPK being true heavy metal... on account that it was certainly heavy and involved copious involvement with the banging, clanging and cluttering of your actual 'metal'. But, I see that they have now been taken out of their original Industrial Rock pigeon hole and moved to one labelled Noise Music. One presumes that there must be a pigeon hole somewhere labelled Silence Music in return.

Obviously, Paris Hilton will always be found within the pigeon hole marked Utter Shite.

Who comes up with the terminology?

Where can I find my preferred Deth Kuntry?

EDIT: Fer cryin' out loud!!! I just did a search for the Heavy Metal genre...

@Kza, do you mean alternative metal, avant garde metal, black metal, cello metal, christian metal, classic metal, death metal, doom metal, folk metal, funk metal, glam metal, gothic metal, grindcore, groove metal, industrial metal, metalcore, neo-classical metal, nu metal, power metal, progressive metal, rapcore, speed metal, stoner metal, symphonic metal or thrash metal? blink.gif
Kza
Yeah I get your point and agree with it Sin biggrin.gif

Reading all the wikipedia entries that go right into the details of the differences and example albums etc now.. Interesting stuff..

Heh christian metal could be good, as long as its totally offensive fundamentalist extremist shit with heaps of hatred in it and not all boring hold hands jesus loves you and everyone else christian metal.
Sin
Hey... let's invent some new categorys. How about?

Jihad Metal
Apocalypse Metal
Evangelical Metal

...fer starters. wink.gif

EDIT: Of course, I prefer the fusion of soul and punk. I calls it Spunk.
Dostoyevsky

Right so far im digging Cannibal Corpse, cheers for that recommendation, and I have also discovered Vaginal Jesus and am getting into that too.

Its definitly things more at the death end of the spectrum that I am looking for I think.
