The festspiele is a time of year when old favorites are returned to the stage at the opera house and some of the best shows of the year are "rerun". All the singers/instrumentalists/conductors/dancers and everyone involved in the productions are working overtime to pump out almost one production a day for the rest of the season.

Some Toytowners have been inquiring as to which shows are coming up and which ones I am in, so here goes. Keep in mind that most are already sold out but you can still get tickets. Just show up one hour before the show for student tix and for standing room or approach someone who is selling them on the steps beforehand. You might get a great deal!?! Anyway, half of the excitement is showing up not knowing if you will see the show that night or cut your losses and go check out Shrek.

Otello This one has a great cast of singers and the music is the best of all the shows left this year, IMHO. Here is a synopsis you can print out and take with you. Often better than their version, I think, which costs 5 euros at the door.

The first of two shows is tonight, Tuesday at 7pm. Next is this Friday at 7pm.
Both performances are sold out but there are alway people selling tix up front before the show on the street.

The next show is Roberto Deveraux. This new production began this year in Feb. and stars the world famous soprano Edita. True, I based my character on Agent Smith but it works in the show. cool.gif Even though my part is only one page of music I am on stage for pretty much the entire 3 hours.

The two shows are on July 13th at 7pm and July 17th at 7:30pm.
These shows are sold out as well. (But you can still get tickets!)

Soon to follow that is Roméo et Juliette. This new production got great reviews (except for the costumes and set) and was even attended by our own Keydeck and Badger who enjoyed the opening show on May 30th. Classic love story. Here's the synopsis.

Two shows are Sunday July 18th at 5pm and Wednesday the 21st at 6pm.
Some tix are still available for either 129 or 9 euros or take your chance at the door.

Profundo,
I need some help. I'm going to see Carmina Burana (sp?) tomorrow in Ingolstadt.
Can you tell me what it is about?
All I know about it is that I am likely to recognise one bit from the telly and it is quite dramatic (or something). Thanks!

continued:The last show (that I am in) is Tannhäuser.
This show has so much artistic nudity in the first act that if you have never seen it done on stage before I would recomend it here. Our hero goes to Venusberg (or the land of debauchery) to pleasure his every desire but ends up returning home only to be rejected by his friends. Great singing, great music. My largest role this year and entirely enjoyable. Synopsis here.

The two shows are July 25th and 29th, both at 6pm.
Some tix available.

Keep in mind that there are several other shows to choose from. Lulu is a sexy smash hit if you can stand the modern music, Orfeo is ok (still tix for that), and the most talked about show yet Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
(New Production: Thomas Langhoff) This show is heralded by Germans as the 'end all of be all' as far as opera goes. This show opened last week and is the final performance this season on July 31st. It typically starts at 5pm because it is 5hrs and 45 minutes long. Sheesh! blink.gif

Katrina.
Carmina Buranna is aproximately a one hour concert for orchestra, soloists and chorus. It is very dramatic and sometimes is staged or partially staged, though I have never seen it. The music is often borrowed for movies.

Check out the samples here. You might recognize the first one "O fortuna".

The Lryics are in Latin and were written by Monks. At the time, they were considered racy because they speak of sex, eating, drinking, etc. Things that are bad, you know. tongue.gif

I would recommend it as a concert to hear. When Karl Orf wrote that he said to his publisher, "Throw away everything I have ever written so far. This one I want to be remembered by. It's the best thing I have ever done."

Hiya
I would like to see Tannhäuser again (it is my favourite opera - I sit through the whole thing just to wait for the end of Act 3 for "Heil! Heil! Der Gnade Wunder Heil!" - it is that chorus bit, the opera equivalent of the wall of sound).
Can only go on the 25th though - anyone interested?
Thanks profundo! Was told about the "O fortuna" bit, am not sure if it will be my thing but heck, it was a birthday present so I shall sit and munch chocolate regardless. biggrin.gif

re: Carmina Burana.
It's the music Michael Jackson likes to open his concerts to.
(if he were still doing them sad.gif )
Katrina
Oh right. I have never seen MJ in concert and probably won't now but I think I might know what you mean - thanks!
Big C
I've never seen him live either sad.gif
But I've seen videos!
