Smileys: scourge of the Intarwebs

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Miscellaneous
BadDoggie
Toytown automatically restricts all those damned smileys to only three per post which is at least three too many for my taste but what the hell, it's not my board. At least there's a sensible limit. I don't get the attraction but I'm just not hip to a lot of trends that I might somehow be able to capitalise on, like converting Japanese schoolgirl SMSes to l33t5p34|< and better still, charging the recipient to unconvert it.

So can someone please explain to me what the obsession is with these things and why so many feel it necessary to use as many as possible as often as possible, even when the chosen picture makes absolutely no sense in the context of the text it follows (or worse, breaks up)? I've been a grumpy old man since I was a teenager but I'm certainly curious, especially since there's probably a way to make money off the nonsense.

You dont get it. That's fine. Just dont worry about it.

I reckon adding "woof" at the end of every post when we can see it is you anyway, and the joke is so tired I don't think it was ever a joke, is possibly even more annoying than the occasional smilie.

I've already explained my opinion in Topsy's TT smilies / emoticons

Smileys I would like to add:

sarcasm/irony smiley (for the "yes I said I dropped out of school in the 8th grade but didn't actually" type post)
sheepish/embarrassed smiley (for the "ok I made a mistake and said something incredibly stupid" type post)
very sad/crying smiley (for the "I feel I've been treated unfairly and am going to go hide under a rock" type post)
vomit smiley (for the "your post is either so disgusting, so stupid or so insulting that it makes me want to vomit" type post)

That's about it, the others are pretty much covered.

I used to agree with BD but the meaning behind my posts gets misread so often if I don't use them on an internet forum such as this, with the various cultures, educational backgrounds, senses of humour etc. you just can't avoid them. You can argue that you should be able to use words to convey the subtle meanings but it gets way to too tedious to have to explain everything and dumb down your post to make it universally understood. Regardless I don't think we actually need more than three per post though.

I feel a smiley war thread is long overdue.

I was told once (by a Brit, mind you) that I should use more emoticons around my subliminality and sarcasm so that people would "get it" and not knee-jerkedly pull out the inflammatory, over-the-top repartée spraygun.

If people can lack the ability to deconstruct, I can lack the ability to use stupid little graphics.

I detest forums where people have all manner of graphics all over their posts - a profile pic of sorts, some annoying signature pic etc. Smilies don't really bother me tooo much, but its a bit fucking rich starting a topic on smilie usage "wasting bandwidth" when YOU ALWAYS SIGN OFF A POST WITH WOOF.

Think how many fucking calories a year you waste typing "woof". Think of the additional wear and tear your 'o' key gets on your keyboard. Think about Susan Kennedy from Neighbours walking across Ramsey street and all her clothes suddenly falling off. Mmmmm, mmmm.

If Forums did not allow smileys, signature, profile pictures and the like, forums all over Germany would close down overnight through lack of interest...

I hate them. Fucking annoying things. You click on a topic and it takes hours to load up and keeps resizing from all of the bloody graphics contained therein...

I wonder what Toytown would look like if it only contained things bd understands.

There would be lots of manga school girls. That's how I would imagine it to be anyway.
