Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting Bavaria from Saturday 9th to Thursday 14th September 2006.

On Saturday 9th he will fly from Rome to Munich. In the afternoon he will take a tour in his popemobile down Leopoldstraße and Ludwigstraße. He will end up at Marienplatz at 5.30pm and give a sermon there. Huge crowds are expected. Keep an eye on the webcams.

On the Saturday the U- and S-Bahns will not stop at Marienplatz but will drive straight through. The U3 and U6 won't be stopping at Sendlinger Tor, Odeonsplatz, or Universität either. The downtown shops will be shutting at midday. The roads between Marienplatz and Universität will be closed all day on Saturday and no parking of cars or bikes is allowed all weekend.

At 10am on Sunday the 10th, the Pope will give a "Gottesdienst" at the Neue Messe in Riem. If you live in Munich and pay church tax you should have received an invite to apply for tickets. Around 280,000 tickets have been issued.

On Monday 11th he will visit the town of his birth - Marktl am Inn. There will be so much media attention given to this visit that the town is currently being dubbed "Media Marktl".

The Pope will then also visit Regensburg, Altötting, and on Thursday 14th he'll visit Freising.

School holidays in Bavaria have been extended by a day, to include 12th September. The Holy Father has decided not to hang around for the Oktoberfest which starts on 16 September.
