Meetup in Mainz (near Wiesbaden and Frankfurt)

Weinhaus Hottum - 7pm Wednesday 13.Sep.2006

Hello Gentlemen, Is anyone meeting up on the 13th or 14th either in Wiesbaden or Frankfort? Apparently there are at least a couple of passable pubs in Wiesbaden and I know of a few in FF proper. Anyone planning to venture out one of those evenings, and maybe bend an elbow, and toss around some English. Let me know where and maybe I'll join you.

Ok, so it looks like we have about 8-10 people interested in getting together for dinner/drinks sometime. Maybe we could expand this circle if we all brought someone else along. Anyone interested in throwing out a date/time/place? I think the majority are in favor of somewhere around the Mainz/Wiesbaden area...
Rayepeck
I'm in. Could we do it on the 13th, or is that a bit farther off than everyone had in mind. If it'll work, does anyone have any ideas for a location?
Gen
I'm up for Sept. 13 -- a friend of mine has a birthday but I can't be there so I'll have to celebrate without him.

I even have recommendations from a couple friends that I wanted to post somewhere anyway:

we recommend the Taj Mahal (indian food), Bahnhofstr. 50, Wiesbaden,
Phone 0611/37 33 89.
It is near the train station.

meine Empfehlungen in Mainz:

1. the Italian place where we have our company Christmas party: http://www.alcortile.de/

2. the tied-up ship right on the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke in Mainz auf der Mainz-Kasteller Rheinseite (food's not fabulous but quite all right, and the view over the Rhine on to the castle at sunset is fantastic!)

3. At the IBIS Hotel at Südbahnhof in die Karthäusergasse and then in den "Beichtstuhl" - a typical wine restaurant with very good food

I'm in as well. I guess the 13th will be fine for me, Friday, Saturday and Sundays are always free for me but I should be able to work something out. The tied up boat is good, the food isn't fantastic but its reasonably quick and not at all expensive. The Heiliggeist in Mainz was quite nice as well. I can pick people up if they need a ride. I live in Wiesbaden close to the train station. Looking forward to it.

I'm in as well. I'll let you guys pick the establishment. They all sound promising. I'll look forward to it as well.

OK my work colleague who lives in Mainz suggests Weinstube Hottum which is really worth the walk through the Altstadt -- a typical Mainzer Weinkneipe which doesn't even serve beer. Urig, authentic, looks like it hasn't been renovated in 150 years, good acoustics so we'll be able to hear each other, and tables where six people can sit comfortably. Apparently in Mainz it's also not unheard of that other people will come sit at a table that's not full, so we could meet some natives too. Sounds like a sure bet to me, so if there are no huge objections I'd say let's go to this one. I just now realized that Mainz and Wiesbaden are only 10 minutes apart from each other on the SBahn. smile.gif

How many are we anyhow? We'll have to get this thread split so that the date's in the title...
Rayepeck
I'm still counting on attending, and the location you referred to sounds perfect.

If we can get these meet-ups going on a regular basis then i'm definitely up for joining in. I don't move out there until the end of this month so afraid i won't be able to make the 13th.

My new apartment in Wiesbaden is right in the centre of town so will have plenty of opportunity to suss out the best bars and restaurants rolleyes.gif

Just out of curiosity is anyone up for going to watch Mainz 05 play when they are at home? Might be an opportunity for any of you Americans out there to learn about the beautiful game tongue.gif

Might well be up for coming along, sounds cool, and i've not visited wiesbaden on a social yet !
Gen
hooray! Oh but this place is in Mainz, don't forget. Frankfurters could even conceivably meet at the SBahn to go over...
Gen
So I'm thinking we'll need to call and reserve spaces here at some point, Tuesday at the latest. I volunteer to make the call, and here's my current head count:

I'm planning to take the RE train from Frankfurt HBF at 18:08 and get off at the Mainz Südbahnhof at 18:47 to walk over. Any more Frankfurters coming? I'm going to call the restaurant at 13:00 to confirm the reservation for whatever number we have at that time. Currently:

Ohhhhhh! I hate that I will not be able to meet up with you all tonight! We MUST plan another time again soon! May be a good idea to propose a few dates and see which one is the best for the majority. Look forward to meeting you all soon! smile.gif

Here I was looking forward to a nice wee evening of wining and dining with you fine folks, and five minutes ago I get a phone call to say that I can no longer have this evening off as my boss has to fly to Paris at short notice, and I have to stay and look after the kids. As I am an Au Pair, I have little choice but to shrug my shoulders and say 'I hope you have a fantastic evening and I will be thinking of you all as I cook the kiddies dinner, and tuck them into bed'. Please do keep me posted if you organise something else, theres only so much one can handle of being surrounded by children all day.
Gen
Oh dear. Well Rayepeck's still coming, right?
Number 10

oh I've just gotten home and seen this. No. 10 you have my number, call me yourself next time! My train had just left the station at 18:08 -- well Rayepeck and I had a great time and we went to what looked like a Wine Festival after dinner but it turned out to be a CDU rally. Most of the political folks had gone home already though, but Rayepeck told the people closing the stands that I was his wife and made them give us free wine. Not quite sure how really, but he did. Looking forward to more stories next time.

Mainz is so pretty, but I didn't recognize anything from when I was last there 15 years ago! Very nice shopping district, I avoided looking at the prices of all the nice items in the windows...

Restaurant was lovely but unfortunately they have no outdoor seating. Quite nice food though. Plenty of street cafes in town though, and we popped by Scrooge's afterwards too, which has three different levels and looked somehow familiar -- do they light that fireplace in winter? That'd be grand.
Number 10
Hi,

Yeah I was gonna call you last night, but I got caught a bit longer at work than planned, then had to nip into town, and after i'd been running it was past 9 so i figured it was probably too late to head over to mainz then... glad you had a cool evening though.. i'll join you next time for sure
Rayepeck
Yeah, you all missed out on a great time in Mainz. We got to swill plenty of free wine at the rally/wine tasting, food was impressive at the restaurant, and Gen made an awesome wife too biggrin.gif Lucky for us that we had arrived sufficiently late to miss all the polititians!!! Let's do it again soon!
