Hi All,

I would be grateful if anyone could advise me of the legal aspects if as a British citizen I move to Germany to live there permanently to be with my German girlfriend who is resident there. I have been told that there is a fairly new law with regard to European citizens that you are free to chose where you reside inside the EU and the only thing you have to do is to get registered. Do I need to do this when I enter the country or just before my initial three months staying in the country are up? I am NOT intending to work in Germany at least not for the foreseeable future as my girlfriend has a career and for the time being I am going to stay at home taking care of her children. Also, would I be entitled to free health / dental care and so on? I have an EHIC which I have been told will cover me for up to three months, but then I am not sure how after that time I can enter into the German health care system if I am not working and paying health insurance.

Any advice/ help would be very much appreciated,
Thanks,

Correct, you can live wherever you want.

Do it straight away, you need to go to the Ausländeramt and fill in a bit of paper. Your missus will tell you where to go.

You bastard, you're living my dream! mad.gif OK, not the bit about looking after children, but the rest of it...

Even if you do start work, it won't really make any difference; you don't need a visa or anything.

No, EHIC is not valid, you must have your own insurance. You don't need to "enter" the German health care system, you just have to have insurance in case you get hit by a bus or something. This is cheapest through a private expat scheme in the UK like BUPA International. Type 'health insurance' into the search box for 8,000 threads relating to this.

Good luck with the move, bastard wink.gif

Thanks very much for your advice and help. I have looked at the BUPA health schemes and they do seem reasonable and so will go with one of those. Don't forget to spare a thought for me when I am trying to persuade three young children with my very poor German language skills not to empty the contents of the fridge all over the kitchen or trample in mud and sand from the garden after I have just cleaned the floor! sad.gif

Just thought i would say... I have been living here since March and I am still not registered, Because I wasn't allowed too till I got health insurance (which I have now).

My partner and the kids get there's through my partners work but and registered here straight away, but because we are not married I have to go to the immigrants office to register.

I hope you all the best when you get here and hope you enjoy looking after the kids...hehehehe, Just got mine into Kindergarten this week

I don't know if you are an EU citizen or not, but as an EU citizen, I didn't have to present health insurance or anything like that to get registered.

i have also just moved to munchen to live with my girlfriend who also works, but has no children so i have the perfect dream.Dont worry to much if you have your EHIC you will be coverd for yoyur medical treatment for a period of three months but you must register in the country as soon as you arrive. You will have to get a lohnsteuerkarte this will then register you as liveing in munchen i was lucky as my girlfriend helped with most of this proccess. You may also have to register at your local arbeit office.any way best of luck and yes we are both LUCKY BASTARDS rolleyes.gif

Ditto, I just moved to munich to start a new life with my german fiance. Just sorting what documents i need to register, sounds pretty simple (i hope). I thought that was a perk of being pro europe anyway , englands full to bursting with non brits so it's about time we spilt over on to the main land! Live the dream people... wink.gif

It's simple if you have income (or money or a person you can live off) and you have valid health insurance, otherwise it's impossible.
