Well, that did happen 50 years ago, in the amusingly named Wankdorf-Stadium. But it happened on the 4th of July, just like this year. Don't know why they would celebrate it today.

Please tell me we don't have anything like this in England because of when we won the football back in 1966.
You should celebrate when you win, not every year afterwards - why do you need to win again? Suprised they aren't celebrated the recent German (sorry Greek) EM win.

QUOTE
The "Miracle of Bern" as it was later called meant more to the German people than just a victory in sport, however broad the enthusiasm for soccer is developed in my country.
Germany at that time was still in ruins, not only physically, but also morally. We were far away from the political stability and economic prosperity that would later become a trade mark of post-war Germany. The "Miracle of Bern" provided the Germans in 1954 with a new feeling. So far they had been considered as losers - in history just as much as in soccer - in whom no one placed any great confidence. The victory in soccer triggered off a series of miracles - the economic miracle, the "Fräulein miracle" etc.
To give you some perspective on what it's all about. From the German embassy in India.

Don't know. Emancipation of women in Germany by ridding themselves of the Fräulein title? Write to Frank Elbe, German Ambassador to India. At least in 1998.

Clearly it refers to the miracle of the frauleins here being able to carry over 18 litres of beer in each hand.

Dunno about the Frauleins, but there was this Austrian guy on Wetten Dass...? who could play two trumpets with four Masses (sp?) balanced on them.

Hiya
"Fräuleinwunder" has several different meanings, from German actresses such as Elke Sommer appearing in US films to young German female authors coming to the fore. "German Girl wonder" is sometimes used to translate the term.
Nowadays "Fräuleinwunder" is used for anyone from Heidi Klum to Judith Holofernes to Jeanette Biedermann.

PS I bet that guy from "Wetten dass...?" gets loads of PA offers now, that was crazy.
