Is this possible? Answer: yes

Just wondering, I'm planning to move to Berlin for maybe 5 months next year. I don't want to work, so I'm going to bring lots of cash with me. Is it possible to find a flat to rent for maybe less than 200 a month? All I need is a bedroom, a bathroom with shower and toilet, a living room/kitchen. Just a bedsit I suppose.

Yes, this is possible. I have a friend that just moved to Friedrichshain and she got a sublet from a student for 4 months. It included everything for only 180 euro a month. I don't know how she found it but I will ask and post what she tells me.

Try craigslist.com - then check out berlin. You can post there for free, and alot of people will mention that they're looking for a place and/or have a place to offer while they go on vacation. Usually they're pretty reasonable. Oh - it's in English mostly too.

dunno. I was in a dive of a houseproject (the 84) for 125 a month. The owner of the building was getting about 65 per room, the rest of it was 'soli-money'; however, since it was for many people "just a cheap place to live where they could spend the rest on drugs" (someone elses description), a lot of money wasn't paid up.

I don't know if that helps answer your question; it should put into perspective one thing: the housing market is way overinflated in berlin. We, my wife and I, pay 411 warm for a place on danziger str. Conditions of the buildings vary widely though. Ours is okay, though you'll find other flats with coal heat, in a WG (living community, shared toilet and bathroom and kitchen for 4 or 5 individual rooms), where the individual room should be quite cheap.

Thank you

I noticed that most of the ads are for rooms in shared apts. Is it easy to get a one bedroom apt. I'm not really up for sharing!

Just letting you know that you can only stay in Germany for three month. After that you need a Aufenthaltsgenehmigung, which you won't get if you don't work or study. Sorry!

Good luck and have fun here...

Your're from Ireland? Is that right?
In that case you can stay here as long as you like without working.
You may have to prove some kind of means but it's not the same thing.
Cheers,
Rob.
