I'm not saying that because I'm biased: it was phantastic in Casse Croûte!
The food was to die for, service was very friendly and competent, the ambiance was very relaxed, very tasteful interior.

And with my favourite companion I had a perfect evening wub.gif

We very much enjoyed Brasserie Cassis. It's a small restaurant near the campus with a very cozy atmosphere. It was decorated for Valentines day and they were serving a special menu complete with a 4 course meal, Sekt and a red rose for the ladies. We were able to try a number of things and everything was good. Matt loved the olive encrusted lamb and I liked the spaghetti with scampis. The service was a little slow (we were there for four hours = long romantic dinner) but I'm not sure if that's a usual thing or because it was a holiday and the place was full. Either way we had a lovely evening.

I'm looking forward to checking out Casse Croûte next time!

Went out for great Indian food tonight and I can highly recommend this place:

Shalimar, the Indian Restaurant
ABC Strasse 46-47 (im ABC Forum)
44 24 84/ 35 01 99 09
http://www.shalimar-hamburg.de/

One block walk from U Gaensemarkt

By far the best Indian we've had in Hamburg. Everything was delicious and well spiced (not German-no-spice but also not burn your mouth off spicy.) We got some extra spicy sauce on the side that was very tasty. A little expensive but well worth it. Great atmosphere, modern and nicely decorated. A very nice place for a date or meeting with friends and colleagues.

Sushi Dreams is good, very decent sushi. Oma's Apotheke is also nice, good cheap German cuisine in a decent setting. Good steaks! Went to the one in Sternschanze

There is a new restaurant after opening up where I live in Ottensen, Restaurant NIA. Website is a bit sparse but they only opened up over the Easter. It's the same guy that owns Teufels Küche, so if you've been there then you know the quality to expect. I'd highly recommend it if you are in the area.

For Americans missing a bit of home cooking, I can highly recommend Doris' Diner by the University:

Doris' Diner
Grindelhof 43
20146 Hamburg

Open:
Sunday - Thursday 10 to midnight
Friday and Saturday 10 to 1am

Breakfast is served until 5pm and consists of omelets, scrambles, bagels, French toast, breakfast burritos and pancakes. They have a wide range of offerings such as the usual salads, pasta, steaks, potatoes and sandwiches, and also offer Mexican food and BURGERS: beef, chicken, turkey, pork and veggie. Matt had a bacon cheeseburger (beef) with steak fries and I had a turkey burger smothered in cheese and mushrooms with curly fries on the side! We were both incredibly satisfied with the meal and can't wait to go back and try some of their other stuff.
