If anyone is looking for a classy (but affordable) restaurant to go to in Hamburg, try this one.

Wish I could go to "Christos & K" - Hamburg's best Greek - tonight.

I recommend staying with the warm and cold starters...

The warm and cold starters are generally the best option at any Greek restuarant.

Highly recommend "Fusion" at Hotel Side. Food is excellent and there is a good bar too.

"Positano" in Eppendorf is a good local italian too (can't remember the road name).

Ashoka on Budapesterstr. for a nice Indian, in my humble opinion the best in Hmabug, really tasty, good prices and very friendly staff.

Went to Das Weisse Haus last night in Altona/Övelgönne and had their surprise menu. On a Monday night they just give you a bill for the drinks and then ask you to pay what you want to for the food.

On the whole I was pretty impressed.

I don't understand.. so you could give them €0.01 ?

correct - but Tim Mälzer (or Melzer, who cares) might come and give you a black eye instead of an autograph

Well, I guess in principle you could, but most probably they put a lot of effort in making it good so that you actually want to pay for it. It's the same with those free tours that are offered in several cities (Berlin, Munich). You go there thinking that you won't pay anything, but at the end the tour is so good that you actually feel that you want to pay for it. And so you do.

Yep, that's how it works. The food was that good that we paid a decent amount for it. i.e. more than €0,01.

I went to a fantastic restaurant this weekend and it is a must for all Italian food lovers. The place is quite close to the harbour and offers an authentic italian dining experience. Everything is prepared fresh according to your order (so no yukky microwave meals here), it is inexpensive, friendly and most of all delicious. They even have a live talking parrot to entertain you! The italian couple that run the place are wonderful hosts!

I had no clue I had replied to this thread before.
Anyway, to the point, are there any good places to eat close to the Radisson or the rathaus area (that's about 10 mins walking from the Radisson)?
Maybe something "typical" from Hamburg and not very expensive. Thanks for any suggestions.
And if there's someone interesting in meeting up for eating something tomorrow night around 9 then we could even organise an improvised event.

No suggestions? A good bar maybe with something decent to eat?

have not much time now, but Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht at the backside of the Rathaus is nice for a drink and some typical German food (gutbürgerlich = plain fare). In the Rathaus there's Parlament - not exactly cheap, but very nice, very good food, decent cocktails.
On Börsenbrücke there's Finnegan's Wake Irish Pub - my favourite pub, also decent food.
Some other ideas, but I haven't got time, google yourself:
Fleetenkieker, Kartoffelkeller, Cremon (VERY nice, good for Flammkuchen and fish of course).
Touristy: Friesenkeller at Alsterarkaden. Or Deichgraf.

@Panama: By the Radisson is a chicken wings joint with an Australian theme (can't remember the name, maybe Down Under or something like that.) They have lots of different flavors of wings, sauces, etc and it's a great place to have a pint. Inside the Radisson is Trader Vics. It's expensive and the service is atrocious but the food is amazing and so are the cocktails.

Can I suggest someplace to NEVER EVER eat? It's called Tai-Pan and is on the opposite corner from the St Pauli station at the top of the Reeperbahn. They are a Japanese-ish place that offers an all you can eat sushi deal for 9,90 euros. Eaters, beware. This is the worst sushi I have ever eaten. The sign advertises sushi and warm food for 9,90. This consists of old, dried out California rolls, some greasy egg rolls and other strange things I didn't even want to try. Near the front of the restaurant is also a "hot bar" where you can load up a plate with items and have the chef cook it up for you in the sauce of your choice. All the meats and veggies were immersed in a vinegar water (kind of like what raw tofu comes in) and no amount of sauce could cover up that taste. Plus, this part of the restaurant costs extra. There is a tiny sign, but since I don't speak a lot of German, I didn't understand its meaning. Worst Japanese food I've ever eaten, and to top it off they charged us 7,80 euros for two cups of tea! I tried to argue with the waiter over the price of the meal but in this country the customer is not always right...

On another note, if you are looking for amazing Chinese food, try Man Wah, which is on the Reeperbahn one corner up from the Burger King, 18 Spielbundplatz. It's pricey but worth it. My best friend is Chinese and we took her there when she came to visit. She loved it!

I ate at an Italian place which is on a side street close to the Kennedy bridge. Food was good and service very friendly, can't remember the name though.

Hamburger Fischstube at the Collonnaden is great! Reasonable prices for excellent food (seafood).

This is the most useful thread I've seen on TT in ages.

Was out last night with some people at a decent place called Variable on Karolinenstr. 23. Everyone agreed the food was very good, portions ample and prices reasonable - that goes for the drinks too. The place was full but only slightly smokey.

@marymanu - what a drag to be ripped off like that, but you were on the Reeperbahn. I've found the best sushi in HH comes from trial and error in your own kitchen. It's vastly over-priced wherever you go. Check out Vinh Loh downtown near Saturn, Hauptbahnhof and main public library. Huge Asian selection including everything you'll need for sushi except the fish. Fish recommendation: Hagenah's on Bornkampsweg. A bit out of the way by public transport, but well worth the trip if you're planning a party or stocking up. They also have a cafeteria-style restaurant for a good lunch. The place is always packed.

Have to do a thumbs-down on the Down Under. Their wings are over-rated. The sauces for them are rather bland and gooey and as for the atmosphere: think fire in a tunnel and you've got the smoke level, and if it's really full, you have to scream to be heard over the noise.

We tend to commute between Hamburg & Copenhagen for some time now. Our all time Hamburg favorite has always been the restaurants at the Portuguese Quarter.

Choice no 1 is always always Churrascaria „O Frango“ (on Karpfangerstr.19 ... opens daily except Monday). So when we're in Hamburg on Mondays, we turn to O Frango's neighbour, Beira Rio (on Reimarusstr.13) to feed us instead. Both restaurants serve home cook Portuguese food and you may ask the waiters to suggest something not in the menu as well. Both restaurants are in front of Stella Maris Hotel.

For €25 you stuff yourself at the buffet with prawns, salmon, meat and salad and then they come round with nice meat on skewers that they carve onto your plate until you beg them to stop...

Their web page gives a PDF menu with €23,50 for Spezialität Rodizio... & that looks like "just" the meat on skewers

You´ll find a couple of decent restaurants in both the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten and the Hotel Atlantic ...

Maybe it was €23.50 then... but you get as much of the buffet as you squeeze into your gob.

It's nice to see good restaurant recomendations! Must say Ive just recently arrived in Hamburg and it's nice to get an idea of where to get good food! I'm a big sushi fan myself and was wondering if anyone knew of a good sushi restaurant with decent prices? I've been to one on Colonaden and it was alright, but I'm looking for something more 'simple' - plain tuna or salmon sushi, nothing too fancy! Appreciate any recomendations!

The restaurant itself is not very cosy, we normally order at the delivery service, but Sushi Dreams at Osterstraße are very good.
Not too fancy, prices are normal I'd say. And very fresh! The Tuna-salad maki is to die for!
Sushi and decent price is a contradiction in terms.
Although, they do have an all you can eat offer on mon-thur from 6 p.m. to 21 p.m. for € 15,00 (students € 13,00) - but that means you cannot order what you like...

We've been to the one in Barmbek, it's round the corner from a friend. That one is very good, Mat even got a decent chili con carne (after saying it should be without sweet corn and hot as in English hot, not German hot).

Have not got around checking out the one in Osterstraße, but it's next to where I have painting class, and it seems to be quite busy for this end of Osterstraße, even on weekdays - which is a good sign.

edit: do you live in Sillemstraße now? cool!

Surprisingly the best sushi (and for the best price) that I have had is at the little stand in the Mercado in Altona. I love their raw salmon bowl - rice with salmon sashimi, fresh veggies and terriyaki sauce, and for about 5 euro. Yum!

I agree with Hammonia - you don't want sushi to be TOO inexpensive...

When my mom was in town we tried out a few restaurants, all of which were fabulous.

Best sushi i've had in Germany so far...Hensler & Hensler (Elbstrausse) www.h2dine.de . THe restaurant seems a bit pricey, but the sushi was definitely on standards for what i'd pay in the states and it was absolutely fantastic and fresh. I'd be sure to make a reservation though.

Gastraum 4 Experiment. Near the Messhallen station. www.gastraum4.de (i think thats the website) There is a new menu like every night and they put it up for you on boards as you eat your meal. The food was wonderful and it was nice to take our time with our dinner.

We tried the veggie "fajitas" - a bunch of spinach soaked in what tasted like powdered vegetable broth and wrapped in a flour tortilla. So gross.

Our friend had ribs, which looked good and the fries were ok. So maybe it's just the veggie selections that suck.

There is an Arabian place on Heussweg (before it crosses Osterstrasse) that has nice veggie selections. I've had both the felafel wrap and the grilled veggie wrap. Super yummy and under 5 euros. It's called Arabian grill and it's near a veggie stand and a dry cleaners.

For those of you who eat meat, I highly recommend the duck in plum sauce with apricot rice. Mmm!

Agree, the food there is really good.
They belong to Saliba, but are much cheaper with the same good quality.

Has been discussed Romantic restaurants in Hamburg already.

We have been to Le Marrakech Orientalisches Möbelhaus und Restaurant last week.
They have an Arabian night on Thursdays (reservation necessary!).
For € 26,00 you get a welcome drink and as much from the mixed hot and cold buffet as you like. There were 42 different mezze (all vegetarian), I hardly got
to try the other dishes, was so full already. The food was lovely.
After the buffet there's a belly dancing show and later a dessert buffet with lots of fresh fruit etc.

It's not exactly cheap, but a nice night out and the ambiance is phantastic.

Can anyone recommend a nice French restaurant? My hunny and I would like to go out for Valentine's day and have a nice meal and good table wine.

i have only had breakfest in one french restaurant called Cafe Paris and it was great. I havent been to a restaurant called Casse Croute but was strongly recommended by my colleagues.

I might be biased, because a good friend of mine is working as a chef there, but I second your colleague's opinion about Casse Croute

Café Paris is only 1 minute from my office, very nice food, but in the evening very crowded and loud, not exactly romantic...

Laurel, Casse Croute is probably already booked for Valentine's day, if you want to go there, you should make a reservation soon.

If you can't get in there, and French is not a must, I can highly recommend our favourite restaurant, La Pergola (Italian), its just round the corner from you, on Osterstraße, kitty-corner from Karstadt. The food is phantastic, and so is the service.

Thanks guys! Reservation booked. Hammonia, we will try out La Pergola next time. We really like the Italian place on Osterstrasse past Schulweg. Can't think of the name, but the owner waits on you and the food is excellent.

I looked at the menu for Casse Croute and it appears to be mostly German fare. Are you guys sure your colleagues said it was a French restaurant, or is it a German restaurant with a French name? We have reservations for Th. but Cafe Paris looks more like what we are looking for.

Cassis at Grindelhof is great too, good French cuisine...

Casse Croute is more Mediterranean style (at least that's what my friend says - I've only eaten there once, but that was very nice).

edit: did see it, but thought Casse Croute was "French enough" for you - imo they do have quite some French style stuff, they just don't give it posh names... Chacun à son goût, eh!

Café Paris is nice, but not very cosy, if you are looking for something romantic, it's probably not the right place.

We had our Christmas do at Le Plat Du Jour - it's a French brasserie. Excellent food, quite vivid too, but not as loud as Café Paris - and it's just round the corner from Café Paris, at Dornbusch (it's not far from Finnegan's, to give you an idea).
The waiter was very French, he felt offended when we asked him to tell us about the deserts again because nobody understood him before due to his strong French accent. Think he made a bit of a show for us stupid Germans
It's a very small place, if you want to go there, hurry up with reservation.

These good friends of mine have just recently opened a cafe-bar in HH, I will be up there in March but haven't had a chance to try it out. Anyway they are excellent cooks from the time I spent with them in Stuttgart, they have something on this week for Valentines and are usually open for lunch through to early-evening, so give them a try if you are in the area!
