Texas Barbeque - Where to get the ingredients?

Company picnic

I just started for a German company (sorta in management) and the guys and gals here are now looking forward to a company Texas Barbeque.

I have people lined up for various things, but was just wondering if any of you folks could give me some leads.

Do Bavarians normally get their beer in Kegs?

Anyone know a good butcher for Brisket , sausages and ribs?

I guess watermelons are out, right?

Plus, fresh tortillas and chips. Salsa? (Figured I would bring some back on my next trip to Texas in a week.)

Anybody ever try to carry Pinatas on a plane?

don't know about big kegs, but you can buy mini kegs which hold about 5 liters of beer. go to any getraenkemarkt.

german's do eat spare ribs. don't know what briskett is in german, but they do have beef here, it however tastes a bit different, but splattered under bbq-sauce, still tastes good.

watermelons can be had at any supermarket. might be small, but they exists. just saw some yesterday at wal-mart.

tortillas: there was a big discussion about mexican food and shops in munich. look here.

Tacos y Tequila had a cinco de mayo party and had a pinata. call them.

Any drinks store will have kegs of beer available. If you ask nicely, they can probably even provide it cold for the day you pick it up. Up to 50 L, but probably 30 is more manageable.

Brisket is apparently Rinderbrust, but a cook can probably give a better translation. Most of the butchers around are pretty good, but if you are putting in a big order, give them a week's notice. Expect to pay through the nose, it's way more expensive for meat here.

Salsa and tortilla chips can be had at any grocery store, but for good stuff, check out the Mexican shops, Schulstraße 38 or Westenriederstrasse 43(haven't been to this one myself).

You can get big watermelons at the Turkish shops near Hauptbahnhof. Other places too, that's just what stuck out in my mind.

Actually, I have carried a Pinata on a plane, but I was 8 at the time, so I don't remember any difficulties. Ask again at the Mexican shop.

You should contact David who organised the Cinco de Mayo party which was held in Tacos Y Tequila. He's involved with the Americans in Munich website. He organised a Pinata which was a lot of fun. Dunno if he got it here or not.

EDIT: Just noticed that Elfenstar made the same suggestion...oops.

Mercado de Mexico, Neuhausen

they make pinatas, you can order fresh ready made burritos
and they also have plain tortillas, dips, chips spices.

Brisket of beef is indeed the breast part. Dunno if they'll cut it exactly the same way here as in the US, and it will taste different probably (seems to me that beef isn't hung much here)

This link to a PDF at Beef Org might help you to get a visual idea of meat cuts. It has pictures of most US beef cuts.

Germans eat pork ribs by the bucketload, and they are everywhere. Got to a butcher though, as 'supermarket' ribs can be skinny little pieces of crap.

Vinzenzmurr has good ribs and I like their beef, it is pretty good. If you ask for the head butcher and tell him what you want and how you will cook it (with a couple of days of advance notice) it is usually no problem (at least in the Vinzenzmurr near me).
If you specifically want aged meat and are willing to pay top dollar then you should go to the Viktualienmarkt.
You can get watermelons in most supermarkets.

make your own pico de gallo or ask one of the restaurants if they'll do it for you.

2 medium tomatoes, diced small
1 fresh jalapeño, minced
1 lime, juiced
1 small red onion, chopped
1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped
salt & pepper, to taste

Should cover and refigerate overnight, or at least 4 hours. This recipe is supposed to be for two people, but really its only for one...

fyi: you can also add tropical fruit like ripe mangoes, papayas and citrus fruit (skins peeled) oranges, grapefruits etc to make an awesome fruit salsa to go over dishes..goes great with fish.
Big C
The watermelons at Lidl seem to be bigger than in other supermarkets.

at least in the Vinzenzmurr near me

The problem with Vinzenzmurr (IMO) is the fact that it is a bit hit or miss depending on which one you choose. I equate Vinzenzmurr with the meat counters in supermarkets back in the UK: Not a great range of cuts, and lots of semi-prepped ingredients.

Reminds me, anyone going back to the south of England soon should check out a Safeway. Now owned by the Morrison "family" it is beiong run into the ground. The wine selection has been reduced to 5 shelves of 1.5 litre screw top bottled Hock, and effing Liebfraumilch. The dopey owners also shipped KILOS of black pudding in, becuase they believe thats what "everyone" wants. Result? kilos of black pudding being thrown away of course. Absolute idiots trying to run a national supermarket chain like Arkwrights corner store. Sorry, very off topic.

Thanks to all. I am making a trip down to Mercado de Mexico. Sent them an email. I will be in Texas next week and trying to figure out what I should bring back.

One of the ladies here live outside of Munich and appears to have a pretty good butcher. Lot cheaper than inside town.

The big debate now is where to hold it. Some have indicated Ostpark. There is a Biergarten there. Others have indicated a park on the Isar.

It appears from some comments that some of the Germans feel that if we have it at Ostpark it is "just another biergarten party".
jml
PM Texas Tornado, her man can hook you up (for a fee) with a Gazebo spot on the Isar, permits, trash pick up up, food, icecream and beer delivery. Normal cost I think is 20 euro per person for the whole works but if he's willing it should be a lot less if your bringing your own grub.

And PS: Since I've plugged this option now a few times...I should say I don't get a commission, don't even know them, Ive just been on the organizing ends of these things and think this package sounds like a very good deal cool.gif

Then have it at Westpark. There are BBQ facilities there and it isn't in a beergarten.

I love Westpark. Huge open areas, good BBQ spots, Hopfengarten & Rosengarten if you want them and of course Kino, Monde & Sterne...

I got back from Texas last tuesday and brought back a Pinata. Mercado wanted 42 euro. Back home they were 3.5 euro. It has made quite a stir with the Germans since they had no idea of the "cracking of the Pinata" tradition.

On tueday I am going with a colleaque to check out the sports center in Ottobrun. Sounds like a good setup. He has 4 smokers, soccer field, tables, etc.

I also cheated and brought back huge containers of salsa from an "HEB grocery store" in Texas. Very good salsa and cheap. Customs was so concerned about "my pinata" and embarrassed afterwards that they never even considered my other bags.
