Seems like Damien-Rio-Brandon and Mercedes-Aalyah-Johannisburg are getting some coverage by the German media.

Is
chavism gonna spread to Germany now? Don't we already have German chavs? What is characteristic about these "German" chavs? What are their attributes?

We certainly have German-Turkish chavs, if you ask me. A bit like a cross between chav and hip-hop.

Jenny_L,
Yes it is just a slang for shitty working class*. To be honest it is a southern word and nothing new...in the North we call them scallies... Funny how words create a media interest even though these people have existed for years...
I wonder if they watch the news the
Chavs and scallies and realised that the world is taking the mick out of their style. But alas if you grow up in one of these areas your kids seem to think that the style is okay; my nephew loves the scallies style...
*The Hip-Hop connection is a red herring as they have their own version of sports wear which is more like an updated shell-suit than really hip-hop gear. Especially as they don't wear them baggy but relatively tight...and the bottom of the shell-suit bottom are not flared (which in my opinion looks terrible)...

Yep, Prolls are very prevelent in the Cologne and Ruhrpott areas.

I saw a chap on the
u-bahn this morning sporting reebok classics, adidas trackies and sweater. He was wearing a plain white cap but the underside of the peak was burberry check. He was also wearing two gold earrings and a large signet ring. And he was (white) German (he was carrying a copy of Bild). He got on at Poccisstr and off at Obersendling.
It was a proud moment for me to see a proper German chav.
HelterSkelter
Aug 28 2006, 12:40 pm
My number one chav item in Germany (apart of the obligatory gold chain of course) would be the "van Dutch" trucker-cap.
A chav is a Proll, but a Proll not necessarily a chav... but similar!

Even the liberal-ish German meejah freek if aspects of "Ausländisch" street/youth culture become attractive to "pure" German youth becasue God forbid they be picking something up off the "kanacken" rather than forcing "

The Hip-Hop connection is a red herring
depends whether you are talking about scallies or the German-Turkish equivalent of chavs, i think. the latter really do seem to have a bit of a hip hop theme going on.

@Owain Glyndwr
Correct but that is more of an Ally G stuff...which to me isn't a chav...or a scally as most of the Scallies in the North aren't into Hip Hop nor are their bredwin in Essex...
The German Turkish Hip-Hop or Brit Asian Hip-Hop trend in my humble opinion shouldn't be mixed up with Chavs...Sorry to say it guys but Chavs/Scallies style is generally a white working class phenomenon (can't spell that)...

Cause that would have been totally so not PC in a socialist country. Proll is short of Prolet, which again derives of the latin word "proletarius" which was the name for the roman underclass.

This is not a new story, just a recycled one anyway. Germany has long had it's version of Ali G, namely Erkan and Stefan. Interestingly, at least one of them if not both of of them come from from quite well to do backgrounds IIRC so much the same as the British version.
There's an argument to be had about how some very middle class meejah folk portray the working class as "comedy figures".

Cracker creator blasts 'chav' TV -Studio bosses 'ridicule white working classes' QUOTE
One of Britain's most celebrated screenwriters has launched a blistering attack on the makers of so-called trash TV, accusing them of exploiting the white, working classes for their own amusement and entertainment...
...McGovern accused industry executives of treating their audience with contempt: 'Normally, they would look to people on the left to speak up for them, but they haven't. Because they're not sexy. Unlike black lesbians, white, working-class men aren't sexy. So they are either ignored or patronised
There's a lot of truth in what he says. Although I'm often guilty of it myself, there is nothing clever in ridiculing peope from a different socio-economic background,

What are scallies?
It's a name we in Manchester use for our fellow working class who are feckless - their off spring whilst not robbing the local corner shop are likely to be hanging around the streets: boys dressed in baseball cap and jacket with hoods, updated version of a shell suit or tight at the angle!!!, Girls (not so sure), but cheap jewellery, hair pulled back, short skirts (still wearing stone washed version were I am from), and maybe a kappa or lacoste tracksuit top to finish off the look. Anyhow, that's what I would say.

May not be clever but it can be damned funny!!!

PS. And that includes Hooray (how do you spell that one) Henries or Tory-boy jokes just as much as Chavs/Scallies or Ali G Hip-Hop parodies... "Chav" comes from the Romany "Charver" meaning "young lad".
I rememmber "Charver" being used in Newcastle when I lived there before the "Chav" phenomena.
Incidently "cutting edge" Radio M94,5 has picked up the chav theme so it'll be in the mainstream German media a lot more in the next few weeks I guess.
