Do you like you national anthem's lyric? Is there anything in it you wished you could modify?

Well before starting from myself i need to find an english translation of mine first. rolleyes.gif
boomtown_rat
bit too much God and Queen/King stuff in the British one
Schotte
I know the words to mine, but if I could modify it I would make the word "bastards" come into it proper and not just some unofficial bit added on. rolleyes.gif

In seriousness, I'd probably change it to Highland Cathedral anyway, less teuchtery and more hair on your neck stuff.

On that subject, watch this ... brilliant!

Not sure how "Go West" would go down at the rugby mind ph34r.gif
MonksTown
Not sure if they have rugby but there are LTS of hunky sportsmen batting, swimming and kicking for the other side in Team München, the umbrella lesbian and gay sports association. cool.gif

Surely YMCA would be more appropraiet though. wink.gif

Maybe for the homeless section of Team München laugh.gif

If You like Highland Cathedral Here are the Lyrics

Highland Cathedral

There is a land far from this distant shore
Where heather grows and Highland eagles soar
There is a land that will live ever more
Deep in my Heart, my Bonnie Scotland

Though I serve so far away
I still see her Dreams, cities and streams
I can't wait until the day
When I'll come home once more

And so Lord keep me from the harm of war
Through all it's dangers and the battles roar
Keep me safe until I'm home once more
Home to my ain in Bonnie Scotland

Ours is a tad single-minded... surely by now we could add a few more gripes than just the 'Saxon foe', yawn...

English text:
We'll sing song, a soldier's song,
With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus:
Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song

In valley green, on towering crag,
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
We'll chant a soldier's song

Chorus

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
The long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Inisfail
Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
So chant a soldier's song.

I'm English. We don't have a national anthem. sad.gif

I tend to whistle that when I'm faced with a tough problem or need to concentrate. And I gave my youngest brother a wind-up music box with it for Christmas.
As for my anthem, they text is great poetry, very period stuff, but the melody is really only fit for Irish drinkers. Oh, and the part about " ... land of the free ..." should only be hummed when raising the flag over Guantanomo Bay prison.

I quite hate the militaristic tone of our anthem (and yes I know the history of where the song came from). Though I would have prefered a simple lyric free musical number.

Vastly prefer "America the Beautiful"

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

My dad used to say they should replace the english national anthem with Tubthumping by Chumbawamba...

@ Gemini, I agree, as usual.

we had highland cathedral played by organ and pipes at our wedding. started with the organ and then the piper came in about 30 seconds later as we were walking back down the aisle; the place disolved into tears. magic is was, pure magic!
