Hi, my name is Lauren and I am moving to Grunwald, Germany (outside of Munich) in about 2 weeks. I am really excited about experiencing a different culture, but a bit nervous at the same time! I guess I just have some general questions about some things and if anyone has knowledge about anything I'd really appreciate any help!

1. do many germans speak english? say if you are in a store or something and cannot remember some german or something.

2. what is the best celluar service to get and what is the best way to make international calls? (to the us and other european countries)

3. is it relatively easy to make new friends even with the language barrier?

4. are there certain venues where a lot of english speakers go? say people from the uk or the states.

thanks in advance for any help

1. Yes, most Germans under 40 had to learn some form of English during their schooling. Wether they
remember any of it or want to use it is a different matter.

2. Depends, on how long your going to be here. All major cell phone carriers require a 2 year contract. Pay as you go contracts have no time limit, but the call prices are a little more per minute. The cheapest way to call the US and other EU countries is with VOIP (internet calls) or with pre selection numbers.

3. Yes

4. Yes, Have a look at the Calendar (Option on the top menu bar) or read thru the Events/Meet-ups section. There is something happening almost everyday of the week.

Now how about a little more about yourself. Age, where your from, what you will be doing in Germany...

Hi Lauren,
My answers to your questions are a bit different from those given above:

1. Probably fewer than you think. Also, as alluded to in the first reply, some Germans just don't want to speak English. Brush up your German instead, it's the best way to avoid disappointment.

2. I can't recommend any one in particular. Try doing a search (upper right corner) for "international phonecalls" and "mobile phones", for instance, the topics have been discussed many times.

3. No (my personal opinion).

4. Yes, lots. Probably your best bet for making friends, especially at the beginning. As suggested, just look at the Toytown events calendar.

Hope you'll enjoy living here. smile.gif
