Minced meat sell by dates

I bought a kilo of minced meat on the 14th August at Kaufland with a Haltbar bis datum of the 19th August. Today I lovingly transformed it into a beautiful lasagne that my wife now will not eat because as far as she knows minced meat MUST be cooked on the day it is put on the shelf.

Is this true and are Kaufland trying to poison me and its other lasagne loving customers ?

As long as it is cooked through i can't see a problem tbh

I routinely eat stuff well after the sell by date, your nose tells you if it's ok

Edit : I meant that this stuff is well within it's sell by date but neverthless i use stuff that is After it's sell by date too.

Been a long day and i'm clearly not communicating very well unsure.gif

Today is the 16th. blink.gif

If you are eating it raw, then it is only good the very first day.

I have a feeling that mince meat must be sold the day it is minced. But not necessarily eaten.
If you have made such a delicious dish well hard luck on your wife, more for you.

it needs to be sold the day it is minced but if refrigerated it can last a few days before eating. Or so I have been doing for years now and I have never once been poisoned by it.

Never had a problem anywhere in the world provided you cook it before its sell by date. You can also freeze it immediately and it will keep up to 2 months in the freezer.. Remember there will be a difference on freezer life between pork and beef. Beef lasts longer in the freezer. If you cook it before freezing thats also fine. Happy cooking! wink.gif

They tend to sell minced meat as quick as possible because the larger surface area means it oxidises quicker, and can look a bit grey rather than red. Does not affect the flavour as such. Remember, decent quality beef sits hanging for 3 or 4 weeks, whereas supermarket beef, and even butchers beef in Germany, probably only gets a few days - hence German beef being well known as "quite crap".

People get weird ideas about sellby dates. I personally ignore them on meat. I've bought stuff here that went on the turn a bit WELL before the stated sellby date, and have also eaten stuff that was fine well after the date. Butchers don't even give you a sell by date, so the only way to go is to trust your nose in all cases. If it smells rank, then don't eat it if you are that scared. Eating minced meat on the day of purchase is a complete load of utter insanity and madness though. Think supermarkets take it off the shelf if its not sold that day? No hope in hell. I don't eat minced beef raw unless its fillet, and minced before my eyes. In fact, I would mince it myself anyway.

In terms of safety, there is no way any kind of bacteria will survive in mince if its cooked. You only have to get stuff to about 68degrees to whack bacteria anyway.

In 2004, the Hackfleischverordnung was changed and allows to give minced meat that has been packaged in small portions a sellby date of up to 1 week. To get rid of the oxygen in the package air is replaced by nitrogen gas.

Just think about sell by dates people. Do you really think that, if, for example, mince meat has a sell by date of August 19th that it will be unfit for human consumption at 00.01 of the 20th? Nope. It can sit happily for another day or two.

It is just another German misconception like the one that leaving a window open and allowing a breeze will kill a fully grown humanbeing in less than an hour
