I'm watching CNN, and they just reported an
attempted hijacking on a flight from Istanbul to Munich. I think they managed to overpower the hijackers and return the flight back to Munich. Not sure I heard correctly. Will report back after I investigate...

Correct that, the flight was going from Munich to Istanbul.

Looking for a haven for your terrorist activities?
Come to Germany!
See where Israeli Oylimpic athletes were murdered in 1972, stay in the flat where 11-September hijackers planned and plotted the deaths of thousands, see the site of a homemade bomb explosion, and visit the airport where a real hijacking originated from!
Germany: the greatest place since Afghanistan!

Excellent - I read in the news today that they've just about finished rebuilding Dresden (well, the Frauenkirche anyway) - they'll wish they'd never bothered.

The reason why Germany was a haven for Sept 11 hijackers is that since the Second World War they were not permitted to develop their own tough internal security apparatus as we have in MI5 in the UK. Years of counter terrorism agaoinst the IRA and surveillance gives Britain a poor breeding ground for extremists as here in Germany.
That said, southern Germany is a mostly benign place to live, notwithstanding the US bases in the north of Bavaria. Go to London and you will see many more small plaques where IRA bombs exploded in the 70s than anywhere in Munich.

Careful what you wish for, there are a bunch of wackos back home who’d love nothing better than to reprise WW2.

According to the news this morning, what happened was that after they set off, somebody announced that there was a bomb on board. They then turned round and returned to Munich. The guy was arrested. Afterwards it then came out that there never was a bomb, and the reason the guy gave for having said there was, was marital problems!! All slightly less dramatic than it sounded at first.

But dramatic nonetheless! At least you'd think so if you were on the plane...

Uh, I said Afghanistan. Don't think there's much of an oil interest there. Besides, as expected, oil prices have been at record highs since the invasion of Iraq. Mom's SUV has been costing a lot more money as a result of the war.
