Okay, I've heard the Schönes Wochenende rail ticket being mentioned a few times and just wondered a few things.

How much it costs?
How many people it covers?
When can it be used?
...and how far can you travel with it?

Thanks for the help!

Schönes Wochenende ticket (info in German)

There's a summary in English here: Price Information Tourist - Bahn.de

Happy-Weekend-Ticket

Valid for up to 5 persons travelling together and for parents travelling with their children aged 14 or younger on Saturdays or Sundays between 12 p.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day for only EUR 30 if you buy your ticket online.[…] Valid on all local trains, 2nd class only.

I think the English translation is wrong though. It's valid from 12 a.m. (i.e. midnight) on Saturdays or Sundays, not 12 p.m.

I get that its Germany and some of Poland but can I travel to Austria on it as well? Could be a cheap way to get to Salzburg or Vienna. wink.gif

You can travel to Salzburg with the ticket, but no further.

Schönes Wochened ticket is €30 for up to 5 people.

Valid from midnight (either night between Fri and Sat or night between Sat and Sun) until 3 am the next day (ie 27 hours).

Valid on all non express parts of the DB system, plus bits of Poland and Czech Rep. No mention of Austria so I assume not valid. I can't confirm the Salzburg info - Salzburg is ok on a Bayern Ticket.

I'm starting to have some doubts, as I haven’t used the Weekend ticket to travel to Salzburg in a while, so things might have changed.

As BR mentions, the Bayern-Ticket (Laender-Tickets Info) will get you to Salzburg. It's cheaper too. You can buy a group ticket for up to 5 people, or a single ticket.

The Bayern ticket is only €25 and is also good for up to 5 people and for one day (until 3am the next morning). If it only for a single it is a bit cheaper, also cheaper if you are only traveling at night. On weekdays it is only valid from 9am but on Sat, Sun, and holidays it goes for the whole day. Bayern ticket also goes for most regional buses (not sure if Schöneswochenende covers this or not). Best thing is, its cheaper than the Schönes Wochenende if you're only going to be in Bayern (or Salzburg). Happy travels!

It covers the first stop past the german border (as well as some lines that go further, but I'm not positive which ones those are). They can't very well halt the train at the exact border and toss you out of the train, so they're lovely enough to get you right inside a neighboring country. For example, I used it to get to Basel as it's right at the border of Switzerland. Same goes for Salzburg-- it's just across the border.
nomis
Right. Same goes for Kufstein which is also on the Austrian border.

You can get further inside Poland and the Czech Republik on a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket -- I have used it to visit Pilzen and Karlovy Vary. You can see the route map if put "Deutsch-Tschechischen Freundschafts-Fahrschein" in the search box at http://www.bahn.de

I find the cheapest way to get to Vienna is by night train but it costs a lot more than 30 euros...

I am curious that is that possible to use this ticket for U-bahn or S-bahn in the same day?

YES

All public transport in all Bavarian cities are included. Don't know about Salzburg.
NOFXmike
Nothing in Salzburg. The ticket just gets you to the station. Their buses are cheap, or you can walk the 15 minutes downtown. But again, just use a Bayern Ticket for Salzburg.

i have a question.

Does this ticket include a return to where you started? for example like a day trip to a city nearby?

i read somewhere that travel was unlimited so one would assume this to be the case. just wanted to check though!

Yes, you can travel anywhere you wish in Germany on the local trains during the validity of the ticket. You could ride back and forth on the same route all day long if you wanted! wink.gif
