Working for a living

There's got to be a better way?

OK so i've started back at work this week after an extended forced holiday ( ie out of work ) of 5 weeks and i'm glad to be earning a crust again.

Now here's the rub, i find myself after only 3 days in gainful employment looking at the TTT and Curry Night threads and wanting to go but knowing it's naughty on a school night.

The buggers have got me on a 6.30 flight tomorrow morning to Bremen so a 4 am start means me tucked up in bed whilst you lot are barely finishing your vindaloos. dry.gif

In addition to which i am suffering from withdrawal symptoms due to going cold turkey from addiction to Dr Phil, Montel et al. Daytime tv on SKY has been my friend and companion over the last month or so.

Gone are the nights of drunken debauchery, caring not a jot be it Monday or thursday, in the knowledge that an early start the next day meant a midday rise to go and get a paper from the Ostbahnhof. smile.gif

It's not a serious whine cos i'd rather be coining it in than not but the idle life does have some appeal to it too for a self confessed night bird and hedonist.

Anyone else feel the same and miss anything from enforced freetime or is it just me that's a lazy sod ? huh.gif

I'm with you... currently trying to make money in a web business to allow myself time to 'relax'.
katz
Stop moaning, and be happy you have a job!
Will2Write
A job... a prison, more like. Ok, we need the money, but I think we were conned when we were told how important a career was at school. Then again, the grass is always greener etc.
bern
ah...sucks to be an adult, doesn't it? I am grateful for my employment as I'd likely be bored without it, but I can see where freedom to do whatever the fcuk you wanted during the day is very appealing...

I think it would be wonderful to win the TOTTO LOTTO then I could call my husband, who is in Egypt working to chuck his job and come back to his family.

I start every wed morning at 6:30, not always easy seeing those first patients. I usually start to wonder why my parents were not famous, so I could just spend their money. ohmy.gif

bluedave you could get into something say like phone sex. No wait there was a guy here advertising jobs for text sex. That wouldn't interfere so much, you could have your curry and text between nan bites. It couldn't be that hard...begin text: baby u r so hot, talk 2 big daddy. etc. etc. (send) then you have some bier.
bluedave
hmmmm there may be something in what you say jml, upload a pic of benicio or brad onto my phone, send them that as a conversation opener and let the good texts roll . . . tongue.gif
SmugLarz
@jml You are a genius...warped, totally warped but a genius...

Now can someone furnish me with an mental image other than Bluedave and phone sex, otherwise I won't be able to sleep tonight laugh.gif

my father who is 59 and a self employed electrician, has started selling on ebay. he has gone from a man who couldnt switch on his pc to a man moaning about getting broadband should be made a quicker process. you may ask what he is selling to virtually make a living and not work, well he is selling valves ( english) tubes ( american) and vintage radios and vintage radio equipment. he has over 3000 valves/tubes all in perfect working order and about 300 radios going back to 1920 crystal sets, marconi radios from the 1930s.i know he is is a lucky position to have all this stock to sell because it cost him nothing, either people clearing lofts/attics out found the stuff and simply gave him or he brought the stuff for peanuts over the years at car boot sales. my mother thought he was mad filling his garage shed loft up with that crap as she called it. now he is selling it and making hundreds of pounds a week. he wishes he had done it sooner as he wouldnt have worked for so long

Except that eBay hasn't been around that long, has it? wink.gif

no its not been around that long but he could have started selling his stuff alot earlier at trade fairs

The biggest problem with having a job (a well-paid job) is that you cannot say what you like, anymore.
sad.gif

It is good, because you live at higher standards, you are better accepted in society, they start looking at you like "wow, look, she made it", but you have to GIVE something in exchange, and that something often involves your

1. total commitment - most of the good jobs
2. your freedom of thinking - in many jobs!
3. your silence is required and expected - depends on job

4. etc. etc. etc.

However, if you are just washing the dishes and cleaning the toilets, there is no danger of losing your freedom.

Soo, what is better?

You have to work anyway, all your life - my generation will work all their lives, no doubt - but if the job is very high-profile, you have to GIVE IN, so sorry for thaaat... sob.
Johnny English
Go self-employed and then you can tell people that get on your nerves to fuck off. Can be quite satisfying.
Grinner
ohmy.gif you would never hear me say that!!

Think it.. maybe. laugh.gif
julia
I think if you are self-employed and tell them to "what you said, up there, I am not going to repeat it, not here", you lose a good share of your business, so it wouldn't be such a good idea... laugh.gif

Putting a tap one one's mouth might be a better choice... put on a tap, close it during the day, and let it all out during the night while chatting with your confidées. Hm.
Johnny English
No that is the joy of it. Might cost you a couple of quid sometimes, but better than putting up with tossers.
crowes
i would love to be self employed, i think in the uk its who you know can be more of a help than what you know. if having the choice of who you have to deal with in business i think i would be happier than having to suck up to some shit i cant stand. i know builders and tradesmen who get asked to do quotes for jobs for people they cant stand ,and they put in silly high quotes because they dont want the job and they usually get the work if they decide they want to do it it after the customer agrees the high price. i went to get a new gate made from a really good carpenter, i mentioned a mutual mate of ours and he then knocked 10% off the bill just because i knew this other bloke. god i wish i was self employed i would strive to make my business work rather than just turning up and working for someone else .
canaryman
I am retired. Its superb biggrin.gif
Kay
At 40 (if your profile is correct)? unsure.gif What are were you, a football player?
canaryman
Nope, I just worked hard and made a few breaks. I would not mind working again for something to do though, I just have not made my mind up what I want to do. I may go back into the car industry as it is quite interesting and not too pressurised.

I would like to have been a footballer though! I had two trials but was crap though biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, I am 40

I take it you won't be designing air bags. biggrin.gif
canaryman
laugh.gif . No ejector seats for naggin wives/husbands!
Kay
That's all right then, that wouldn't apply to me... rolleyes.gif
canaryman
It would apply to my wife and to a couple of blokes I know.
Johnny English
I quite like the idea, but when I calculate how much money I would need to retire it ain't ever gonna happen!

Plus I get a buzz from working (usually!)
canaryman
Working is ok so long as you do not have to work. If you wait until you have enough money to retire you never will retire. It is a bit like a lot of people say that they will never have enough money to have kids, nice car, second home etc etc etc smile.gif
boomtown_rat
I'm a bit confused bd. Don't take this the wrong way smile.gif but I thought you had a leaving do a while back blink.gif what's the story?
OhFFS

laugh.gif Will you marry me?
Crawlie
You want to stop work BD? Move to the US and apply for a resident permit. You will be off work for months... wink.gif
