I have never actually seen anybody sitting about with a couple of guitars in any biergartens over here - I am presuming that there is a law against it because, well, this is Germany.
I can understand that places like the Chinese tower would probably not allow it, as they have all those brass blowing peeps playing, but can anybody shed any light on whether it is allowed/legal/frowned upon to get out a couple of guitars and jam a bit?

I saw people jamming in the
English Gardens on Saturday, not in the beer garden though.

I have wondered this too Don! I miss being able to all sit about in a beer garden round a guitar, with a few beers. I often do it in the UK and the weather is no where near as good - except for this year, when its actually been better than Munich!

It's a bit off-topic, but there's a beer garden not too far from Cafe am
Seehauswhere I've seen some good jazzy\bluesy stuff being played, sometimes
with vocals. It's on the other side of the main road. (mittlerring I think.)

@ roro and even further off topic,
would that be the biergarten am hiershau? by any chance? there is tennis club next to it?
if so, it is a quality place...
back on topic, i have never actually seen 'patrons' providing their own music, but i have seen a lot of annoying 'wandering minstrels' i.e. eastern european fellahs with accordians...
the thing is, i suppose, that the biergartens are all quite cosy places, where you sit very close to your neighbours... and you would be imposing your taste and musical skills (or lack thereof in my case) on others...

You could play not so far away from the chinese turm in the englisch garten. So far the bongo guys use up most of the regular air time but theres lots of others as well.
I think jamming within the biergarten is likely verboten, in any case you'd likely get hassled. One mans mozart is another mans cat wailing and all that...For example, some of the other musicians I've seen/heard of in the park include a group of very off key guys practicing La Bamba and a guy in a kilt playing the theme from Star Wars on a bag pipe...

Yeah. Knowing this place you probably need a licence yourself, filled out in triplicate and the Biergarten would need express permission from every music company on the planet for temporary rights to perform songs...
I presume we are talking about the usual Biergarten jamming involving 15 half songs and ending up with a 2 hour "nah nah nah nah" Hey Jude drunken singalong?
Oh no. Sorry. That only applies to my abilities...

Look! Just because I spend half my time playing Sweet Home Alabama does not mean that I know no songs alright?
I know loads! Loads I tell you! Just cannot remember them at the moment...
Oh sod it... Maybe you are right but I will show you...
