Just introducing ourselves

My husband and I are new in Munich. My husband is an engineering officer in the Canadian Forces, and he will be serving as a Canadian liaison officer and ENTEC (NATO Engineering courses) officer for the next three years. So we'll be living in Munich for three years.

I'm also an engineer by education - I studided biological engineering at the University of Guelph, but I'm currently working on a second undergrad degree in Human Health via distance education. I hope to do a Masters degree in Physiotherapy when we return to Canada. I'm also a certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer, and hope to be able to continue to do a bit of group fitness instructing while we're here, just to keep in practice.

I also horseback ride, and I'm looking for a dressage stable at the moment that is convenient to public transport. We don't have a car yet here in Germany, but hope to buy a small used VW or similar vehicle (our Honda Civic is in storage in Canada for the next three years, free of cost to us).

We've just been posted from Ottawa, where we were on full-time German language training for the past 8 months, since hubby will be working in a German environment. Although I've lived in Ottawa most of my life as well. Hubby's a Newfie, from St. John's, and I was born in Winnipeg (actually Selkirk, but I lived in Winnipeg until I was 8).

Hubby and I are both comic book collectors, and hope to be able to find English language comics here in Munich. We're also sci-fi fans, enjoying Smallville, Battlestar Gallactica, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate Atlantis. Looks like we'll have to wait until they come out on DVD now, though.

We are also runners - hubby is a much faster and better runner than I am, but we both enjoy it. We've done 3 half-marathons and one full-marathon together, and hubby's run two other half-marathons on his own. We hope to run the Munich Fruhjahrslauf next spring, and then potentially the Munich Marathon next fall.

That's us in a nutshell. If anyone shares our hobbies, please feel free to drop us a line. smile.gif

Welcome fellow Winnipeger (I used to work in Selkirk).

If you like running and beer drinking should try the Hash House Harriers, great way to meet new people too.

There is also a Canadian Club for you to check out... actually think they are meeting tonight.

Welcome! (I have a strange déja vu here, I am pretty sure you have already posted introducing yourselves on another thread blink.gif )

There are horse stables not from the Pioneerschule at Sport Scheck in Unterföhring (Bus 59, or a short walk to Fritz-Meyer-Weg, then Bus 50, or a short walk from Pioneerschule to the Bus 188 to Unterföhring). Now, I have absolutely no information about the costs involved or the set up there, I simply know they have horses and are often seen cantering through the English Gardens.

not necessarily. There are ways and means wink.gif . You have two options to watch these shows, either get yourself a fantastic digital satellite set-up (from Bavaria Satellite, who advertise on this site) with a suscription or get yourself a DSL internet connection, a flat-rate, install something like Azureus on your pc, visit certain websites and, well, you kow the rest. Anyways, I watch all those shows too (except smallville, plus a whole bunch of others)

flippin eck, where do you find the time to work? blink.gif

Is it wrong to find the phrase 'Winnipegger' sort of funny sounding?

English-language comics can be found here, though I will say that German comics are a great way to improve your language skills. (A copy of Onkel Dagobert sits on my shelf.) I'll second Carm's suggestion that you check out the Hash. As for sci-fi, I'm afraid you may have come to the wrong place. There really aren't that many geeky people who work in the IT industry on this site.

There's a horse riding school at Sport Scheck am Englischen Garten. There are also comic book shops in Munich. Just do a search in the filed on this site to look at different threads.

My point really was more along the lines of whether or not you'd describe your son as a 'Winnipeg boy'. Were I not at a work computer, I'd try to hunt down the slang origins of the term 'peg boy'.

Hi, I do horseback riding at the Sport Scheck Allwetteranlage in Unterföhring. The costs are:

One lesson: 20 Euro
10 lessons: 180 Euro

If you want a private lesson you have to pay: 20 Euro (horse) + 40 Euro (trainer).

The riding school is a very good one. Organization is great and the horses are well trained.
