In case anyone's bored and wants something to go and look at this afternoon: the Olympic flame is passing through Munich today on its way to the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The exact route hasn't been revealed yet. So far it is expected that it will start at the Olympic Stadium, then go past the Nymphenburger Schloß, through the English Garden, and down Leopoldstr. to Marienplatz.

I know Morning Man Mike from Radio Gong will be carrying the torch near Theresienwiese, so it's headed that way too. I think it finishes in Marienplatz this afternoon.

I hope they have more than just lousy celebrities carrying the torch. Some actual amateur athletes and people who've done great humanitarian things would be more worthy.

The article that I linked mentions some of the people who are taking part. Never heard of any of them:

QUOTE

Dieter Baumann is a pretty famous middle distance runner (who was charged with using steroids but claimed and I believe was found innocent) and Rosi Mittermaier is a downhill skier who got 2 golds and a silver at the 72 Olympics.

Theres a real person carrying the flag from on behalf of Payback.

Customers had a choice to buy a spot at an audition (using Payback points) and then one person was selected.

You can find the full details here but sorry they are in german.

Hiya
Rosi Mittermaier is a Bavarian skiing legend (and a very nice lady to boot). Her son is Germany's only current half-decent downhill racer despite still being at school. Neureuther does milk and cheese ads for Bavarian producers and Wasmeier has an involvement in Bavarian tourism promotion. All are involved in the potential Winter Olympic bid for the Bavarian Alps which is currently in discussion.
I would be surprised if Georg Hackl isn't there too (seeing has he is not only Bavarian and an Olympic Gold winner but he is also a town councillor for the CSU).
