I am planning on moving to Munich in the fall. I need an external hard drive to back things up on my lap top and when I was reading some reviews a guy mentioned that he bought one in the states and took it to Germany but the difference in current burnt it out. Can anyone speak to this?

Most of the external HD I've used come with an AC adapter that is multi-voltage. Just make sure it says something like 100-240V at the back of the adapter. The only thing you need then is a power cord that will fit the outlet you need.

Or if you get a 2.5in Notebook HD and case, most take their power from the USB and/or Firewire port.

Make sure what you buy is actually rated for both 110/120-220/240 inputs and not simply switchable.

I think you mean 100VAC-240VAC (50/60Hz). "both 110/120-220/240 inputs" implies switchable (between 100/120 and 220/240), even automatic.

Thanks everyone for the help! Any reccomendations on a good one that you've used?

They are pretty generic, just go for the cheapest one. I bought a 300GB external
USB2 harddisk for 99 Euros last week.
