Das Weiße Haus - restaurant recommendation - Hamburg

Tim Mälzer (German Jamie Oliver) surprise menu

A nice idea for a restaurant:

Das weiße Haus
Neumühlen 50
Museumshafen
22763 Hamburg

At Tim Mälzer's restaurant Das weiße Haus you can choose how many courses you want, you have a little chat with your waitress in the beginning in order to clarify if there's any food you are allergic to or that really makes you vomit - but apart from that the rule is: what you see is what you eat.
And it all tastes absolutely phantastic. The venue is also quite nice.

Have been there myself a couple of times, and everybody else I know that has been there, we are all of the same opinion: 100% recommendation!

Tim Mälzer started off with a "normal" restaurant, but apart from à la carte he also offered a surprise menu - that was appreciated so much by the customers that now they only offer the surprise menu.

I think the idea is brilliant - it really shows that with good quality foodstuff and creativity you can cook a meal that EVERYBODY likes - and that's his philosophy: Schmeckt nicht gibt's nicht! (That's also the title of his TV show).

Tim Mälzer started off with a TV cook show, he's kinda the German Jamie Oliver, he actually is a friend of Oliver, have also seen him as guest in one of Oliver's shows.
The TV show is also brilliant - if you can stand him constantly talking...
I think it's quite amusing, he tells a lot of stuff about his childhood (funny), he's not afraid to take the mickey out of himself, but you also learn a lot about foodstuff, chemical reactions etc. - quite educating.
And what he cooks is simple, fresh and fast, but he also sometimes uses convenient products - perfect for the modern young kitchen (esp. for working people who like a good meal in the evening but don't have the time to prepare food for hours).

A little warning: it's quite difficult to make a reservation - they are fully booked out, usually more than a month ahead. From 1.August they accept reservations for September - have been trying to call there all morning and couldn't get through...

Sounds like a great idea, though not sure if it'd be my cup of tea I remember hearing that he actually went to cooking school together with Jamie Oliver.

I wasn't sure myself when I went there for the first time - there's some foodstuff that I really don't like, so wasn't sure if I'd like it there - but it was really good - fresh, tasty, creative - oh, and not to forget: the staff are very nice and friendly.

I can only add that my son goes to the same school in Pinneberg where
Tim M. used to go. The story goes the rounds that the teachers at the school
didnt have a very high impression of him (Tim that is...). Story may
have been "improved" over the years.

What's that to do with the food in the restaurant?

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that for the teachers he was a pain in the arse, he seems to be a little know-it-all - but as long as he knows foodstuff, he doesn't have to be a rocket scientist

Here's a picture of the restaurant.

It's an old Captain's House.
