Okay, with this hot weather, I want to make some Sangria (yeah, I know I can google), but I want tried and tested recipes from people I sort of know. So, post your favorite recipes here, and I will try them. smile.gif

Thanks

Don't worry, it's going to get much cooler this week, allegedly.

Thanks mere, want to make some up for the weekend... (may bring on scavanger hunt)

Hey Carm, what kind of sangria are you looking for?
The one I make only has red wine as alcohol and a lot of fruit, but I know a lot of people like to make it stronger. In a lot of places I was served one with a sparkling something, and for me it was a big PUAJJJJ.

The trick is that if you let it rest for a while, then when you eat the little pieces of fruit and you get waaaaaaaasted. rolleyes.gif

yeah that's in my mom's recipe. mainly red wine and fruit and it sits for longer than awhile (but not quite ages)-- yum!
Carm
Yeah, the red wine kind with fruit... I want a recipe that has been tried so I then have an idea that is sort of works.

OK, here is how I do mine. Thing is, I always keep tasting it in order to decide how much sugar and OJ to add because it depends a lot on the wine (you end up pretty happy when it's finished). So I'm not sure about the quantities:

for 1 littre of cheap red wine (my problem is that I never do just one littre rolleyes.gif )

1 or 2 apples cut in little cubes
2 or 3 peaches cut in pieces bigger than the apple.
I sometimes mix fresh peaches and canned peaches. If you use the canned ones, you can add the liquid (syrup?) as the sweatener, and it's much better than sugar.
About 1 cup of orange juice, and maybe a little less of lemon juice (the lemon juice is not a must). If the wine is too strong you can add more OJ.
Sugar (maybe about 5 spoons?)

Put everything together and let it stay in the fridge for a couple of hours. Add ice cubes before serving.
Drink it all on the same day (that's the best part), cause the next day it will go bad.

You can add cognac or rhum, but it's not necessary.
You can also put slices of orange and lemon.

I once added some strawberries and it was really good too. But I like it with a lot of peach.
When you do it with sugar sometimes it's a bit of a pain to mix the sugar. You can prepare some kind of syrup before, or maybe use honey.

I will definately give it a try, thanks Clepto! smile.gif

My advice is splurge and buy some decent wine. It will make a big difference the next day, for some reason bad wine and sugar make a deadly combination for the next day.
Carm
or you could just make more the next day! rolleyes.gif

Yes. Sangria was probably invented to make undrinkable wines drinkable. I think in a lot of bars they still make it with really bad wine. You can spend a bit more and buy a wine that won't give you a horrible hangover the next day. But don't spend too much because then it's better without any fruits rolleyes.gif

Is there a certain type of red wine that works better?
wahoo
My friend's mom is from the Dominican Republic and she doesn't use expensive wine for her sangria. She uses some sprite for the sweetner and triple sec at the end to taste for a bit of kick. If I remember correctly she used red and green apple slices and orange. I will email my friend for the specific proportions, etc.

Edit: I think she uses a dry red...nothing too full bodied.

Lidl was selling Sangria about a week ago.

So, some one has to be the annoying, unfunny, bad timing, don't know how to spell or when to use those thingies that you use before you put down the s !! rolleyes.gif
TT gives you the option to ignore users you know!! laugh.gif

I don't like the stuff first off, but I know that "Sangria's appeal is all about taking your favorite red wine, your favorite fruits, and experimenting with them".

Sangria is typically created from red wine, fruit juices, soda water, fruit and sometimes brandy. When making your own Sangria, use a good quality red wine, and be sure to let it chill overnight. Use Rioja to get the authentic Spanish flavor. In the morning, pour into a pitcher full of ice cubes, garnish with fresh fruit, and enjoy.

You can use white wine too if you like.

I would never use my favorite red wine for Sangria. Because of the price and the taste.
I've made it with the wines that come in bottles of 3 littres and the Table wines and it was OK, even the next morning. If you do it with an expensive wine and you drink a lot, you'll still get headache rolleyes.gif A not so expensive Cabernet should do. But I do agree on the experimenting and tasting it a lot of times before you decide it's ready smile.gif
At home is usually prepared just with apples and oranges, but I like to throw in the peaches, and If you are a strawberry person, you should definetly try those too.

Where did you get that from? The soda water is optional, and the most important thing is to let the fruit sit in the wine for a couple of hours. If not, you'll be just drinking cold sweetend wine.

At home the one with white wine we call it Clerico, If you do it with white wine, I would put only apples oranges. I don't like it that much.

I made a Sangria today so now I know the quantities a bit better.

I put 1.5 littres of Cabernet (paid less than 6 dollars for it unsure.gif )
with:
1 green apple in little cubes
1 red appe in little cubes
A can of 30 oz of peaches in small pieces
the syrup from the can
2 peaches in small pieces
one or 2 glasses of orange juice
triple sec

I let it stay for 2:30 hours outside the fridge and then added a lot of ice to it.

I had forgotten to buy oranges, but it was still OK.

It tasted very very fresh and almost non-alcoholic. So if you want to taste the alcohol when you drink it, add some more hard liquor to it. The fruit with the wine tasted delicius ( we were all digging into the glasses with spoons rolleyes.gif ).

It seemed like too much fruit, and after the sangria was gone, we were left with so much fruit, that I poured some more wine, OJ, triple sec and sugar to it, and kept drinking the result of it.

I only did the 1 green-1 red apple because that's what I had, but you can do it with 2 of the same colour.

If the wine was too cheap, I'll find out tomorow...

Thanks Clepto, made some Sangaria for a BBQ yesterday, was very yummy. Used nectariens instead of peaches as they were firmer. Was very happy with my first attempt. smile.gif
