QUOTE (Tiggi @ Nov 22 2007, 9:49 am)

I'm still hoping someone will contact Jeeves to settle
this bill from curry night last week, when someone left without paying for their food. I can understand confusion over the odd beer, but forgetting an entire meal seems very strange to me.
A Paneer Kulcha is hardly an "entire meal".
QUOTE (Jeeves @ Nov 15 2007, 9:30 am)

Not bad that there were only two items outstanding on the bill at the end of the evening. One helles (that's always guaranteed to happen) and one paneer kulcha (less so).
Still annoying when someone doesn't pay though. Assuming it wasn't just something that mistakenly got added to the bill.

True - didn't even take in what it was, sorry! But yeah, still crap that the last people paying get lumbered with outstanding items.

I actually think it would be an incredible feat to get the meals and drinks for 50 people right and everybody remember exactly what they had. Especially if the drinks are flowing. I really don't think it's fair to blame waiters/waitresses for cheating or people for doing a runner on purpose. It just happens as a result of the chaos going on.
Not being last seems to be the best advice but it's really not fair.

Even though the waitress was fantastic last time, we will be 50 instead of 30...so I think the writing down thing would be great. If I remember I will bring pencils and paper.

I can imagine that getting less and less effective as the evening goes on...

A lot of us at the Friday Beer Garden thing always mark down on our beer mats what we've had to drink, if the waitress doesn't do it herself. Strangely it seems to be the more traditional Bavarian places that do tend to do this. We never pay for outstanding drinks, if their system is so crap that they don't know who has had what, that's their own fault. I'm not a charity.

Why not simply pay as you drink or eat?
This solves most problems...
Do any of the McDonalds in Munich do cocktails?

No..
But they do not do credit either!

IIRC the last person standing has no obligation to settle the bill for stuff he didn't order at a mixed table where everyone paid separately and left during the evening. Does my memory serve me right or am I getting more geriatic by the day?
In legal terms I suspect you're right but , in my experience, you're put under pressure to pay.

Earlier TT topic:
Unpaid bar tabs on a group night out - Last person has no legal obligation to settle upQUOTE (Tara @ Feb 16 2007, 9:15 am)

When a group goes out drinking at a bar it can sometimes happen that a few people leave early without paying their full tab. This might occasionally be intentional, although more likely it is purely accidental.
Either way, it's worth noting that in Germany the last person in a group is not legally obliged to pay for the drinks of others. It is the burden of the bar staff to keep tabs on who drank what. You as a customer are not obligated to help the bar sort out which drinks belong to who. You can legally walk away from the unpaid bill of a larger group. Whether you feel morally able to do so is a personal matter.

In defence of Sangeet (the restaurant in question last week) they did not insist that anyone pay for the outstanding items.
I deemed it better to do so voluntarily because they remember such groups and we will certainly be wanting to go back at some stage.
I'm not complaining - it wasn't a lot of money anyway - but it's a matter of principle and a situation better avoided than dealt with and whinged about afterwards.

@Pas, exactly, and even if they don't put pressure on, you might well feel too bad to leave it if the serving staff have to make up the difference themselves. That's hardly fair either. It's just a really awkward situation all round.

Anybody else inadvertantly posted to the message board when attempting to reply to a PM popup; or am I just reeeeely thick?

It always happens at our class reunions that people leave and don't pay everything they've had. The poor bastards that stay to the end are always forced to chip in to make up the tab.
i am very much for order & pay straight away.
