If you're looking for English-speaking flatmates you might ask in a few of the Irish Pubs in Hamburg, sometimes the barstaff of waitresses live in shared flats and might be looking for flatmates, or they know of regulars who are searching...

I found that looking for a place to rent easy with these great sites.

http://www.campus-hamburg.de/wohnboerse/

http://www.studenten-wg.de/Hamburg,wohnung.html

I've found that most of the advertisers are younger people who are easy with things like deposits, 'finder's' fee's, etc. and don't attach large fees that agency's attract.

I've moved 3 times using this site, each time we found a flat in great districts at reasonable prices, with private landlords (no agency fees !!)... and didn't need €3,000 + euros upfront...

...and because it's mainly young people advertising, English speaking is not a problem.

Do take note, however, that a lot of this accommodation is period (Frist) based and a lot are for single rooms... I was fortunate to find complete flats each time.

Hi everybody,

I am going to Hamburg in October 2007 for 3 months as a student of the Hamburg University. I am looking for a double room (preferable near the University) at the lowest price for me and my husband who would be accompanying me. The University has offered to look for such rooms at the price range of 700 Euros per month for two persons. I was thinking if something cheaper was available. Any information invited.

I used this site:

http://www.wg-gesucht.de/wohnungen-in-Hamburg.55.2.0.0.html

to find the room in the shared flat that I'm in now, but it also has apartments to rent. Prices vary heaps depending on what suburb you want to live in, and you can expect to pay an extra 100 - 200 euros / month to get a furnished place.

This site has some good short term offers that could be suitable for you.

Im heading to Hamburg next may and am sussing out my options early! I am after share accommodation as I dont think I'll be able to afford my own place. I have looked up some of those accommodation sites and they are in German!!! Any other suggestions?? I get the feeling that this is going to be a mission...

Unfortunately they're going to be German. This is Germany. It's suppose to appeal to the masses. If you would like some help, however, I'm sure there are people here willing to help, like myself, to guide you through it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the offer of guidance, it would be much appreciated. I realise how stupid I sounded! I know its germany, its just that some sites had english translation and I assumed that people would recommend such sites. Anyway, should I look before hand or just wait til I get over? I noticed that wencke site had some decent one bedroom apts for 300-400 a month. Is it not recommended to sign a contract with an agent? Is it too expensive?

Hi Keltri

How long are you going to be staying in Hamburg?

To answer your question - it's fine to sign through a real estate agent but they can be very expensive and charge up to 3 times the basic monthly rent as a finders fee so if you can avoid that then that's a bed for you at least!

Hey Brenda

I am looking at staying for 6 months - whether its more or less depends if I can afford it!! I know I'll love the city! I am planning to head over end of March '08, so I'm getting a head start. I'd love to have some living arrangments teed up when I get there, I know I've still for plenty of time. I will also be looking to meet up with other people - I dont know anyone in Hamburg, just a friend in Cologne, so I'll be on my lonesome.

Do you live there already?

Kellie, sorry if I may have sounded rude. That was not my intention.

In regarding to you waiting or not: pictures and words don't reflect the actual flat/room. Remember, they are trying to sell it. You don't want to get stuck in a place you regret. On the other hand, to stay in a hostel/hotel while you look might add up too. Either way there are pros/cons.
Just a suggestion: if you get a place before moving here, don't lock in too long incase it's crap, or you find a better deal.

Good luck!

Hey psychedelics

cheers for the info. wanted to avoid staying in a hostel/hotel as I will have a bit of stuff and a bike, but may not have a choice i guess. I'm hoping by the time I head over I can make a contact thru this forum to help me out!! I'd like to avoid going thru an agent but its finding the right person to help you out. There are so many different recommendations from people, it gets confusing. Did you find somewhere to live?

Hi all,
I've been looking for an apartment for the last couple of months and it's proving to be difficult! I'm looking for something like a 2-Zimmer, ca. 50qm in Eppendorf, Eimsbuettel, Hoheluft.. this sort of area (but not the really posh Eppendorfer Baum etc.) for around €650 warm. But I do realise these seem to be pretty sought after areas which is probably adding to my difficulties!
The usual routine is showing up to an open viewing with 15 other hopefuls, submitting a form, and if I'm lucky, they call me to tell me they've given the apartment to someone else. After consistent rejection, I'm starting to wonder what's los. I've got a respectable enough job for a well known company, but I've only been working here since September. I'm also a fresh college grad which makes me pretty young in comparison to the type of people I'm up against. Is this my problem?

Anyway, can anyone recommend a Makler that I can give some criteria and have them call me if they think I'm suitable? Maybe this is a better approach. Or else, feel free to suggest areas which I should consider! I'm temporarily in Altona at the moment but I'm not so keen, it's a little bit too far from work and it invloves a lot of umsteigen!

Thanks!

SAGA, Schiffszimmereigenossenschaft, Fiefstücken etc. (Baugenossenschaften / Wohnungsunternehmen - see Gelbe Seiten)
offer a huge range of rented accommodation. These outfits are highly professional.
If you have a low income and the papers to prove it you can get a really low rent.
Wouldn't fancy your chances 'tho without a bit of German.
Private landlords have been known to take advantage of naive foreigners...

Maklers and Apotheker are an old German tradition - they take your money off you
without giving much in return.
Next year the EU will sort the Apotheker out (not before time, with Aspirin 20 times dearer than in the UK),
unfortunately the Makler racket will continue.
Avoid Maklers like the plague - they make UK Estate Agents look like saints.

We are moving to Hamburg in July and have two small children (age 3 + 5). We are looking for a flat/house centrally located (preferably with a shared garden).
Any experience or advice about the best way of finding accommodation in Hamburg would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you know some German you can do listing searches on Immobilienscout.

You can enter your criteria for number of rooms, location, price, rent or buy, etc.

Hi everyone,
I'm moving to Hamburg from Berlin in early June and I'm looking for a WG, minimum 3 Mitbewohner. I've found a lot of WG sites, but I'm after some local recommendations for locations. I'll be working near Landungsbruecke in Neustadt, on the harbour, but I want to live in a student kind of area, similar to Berlin's Friedrichshain or Prenzlauer Berg. Hope you guys can help me out. Thanks.
Hammonia
Don't know about Students, but I guess there should be lots of them:
Anyway, areas with a bohemian flair would be Schanzenviertel and St. Pauli.
Both easy access to U3 (which goes to Landungsbrücken).
Would be good to look for places near underground stations "Sternschanze", "Feldstraße" and "St. Pauli" - use google maps.

Also nice and multiculti and full of WGs: Altona or (a bit more expensive and partly a bit more posh) Bahrenfeld (that would be S1 to Landungsbrücken).

Hi Australis

I'm heading over to hamburg for 3 months, in early july and am looking to just rent a room, as I will be out & about. If you find a place and would like to rent a room out to offset costs... I'd be interested. my email is keltri54@gmail.com

Hello,

I'm moving from Kiel (THANK GOD!) to Hamburg soon, and was wondering what the best method or site, for finding my own place would be. I'm not looking for a WG, but rather my own flat with one bedroom and a living room, kitchen and bathroom. Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!!

first of all congrats to moving away from one of the most boring citys I've ever seen.

Look in the Hamburger Abendblatt for adverts in the weekend edition. Dont join any of those "vereins" that ask for money up front and then send you nothing.

Good luck
Thejoymonster
I'm so glad that someone else agrees with me about Kiel, but this is no place to be. There's NOTHING to do!!! Thanks for the advice. Where do I get this "Abendsblatt" that you speak of? Thanks again!
