I have been playing the guitar about 1.5 years. My technique is rusty but it can come back. I would like to learn blues and fingerstyle chord melody styles on the instrument and I am looking for teachers in this area. I own an electric and an accoustic.

Any help?
Jeremy.

Hi,

I took some lessons from Oliver Thedieck - a cool young guitar tutor. His website is http://www.oliverthedieck.de/
You can send him email or call. I think he will have time for you. smile.gif

Best regards,

It just so happens that Michael Claren of In-Between Visual & Musical Creations has a friend that teaches classical guitar. His name is Steffan, he's a friend of Michael's son, Marish.

in-between visual & musical creations

I don't know where Steffan is located. Michael Claren's studio is on Häberlstraße pretty close to Lindwurmstrasse and Goetheplatz (Isarvorstadt area).

PM me for his contact details.

Hi there,

I might also be interested as I am learning chord melody style of guitar. I have been into this for about two years but am not so hot at the monent owing to new fatherhood! wink.gif Minute you get playing the littlun's nappies need changing!

By the way, most of what I know I learned off a brilliant website called Guitarnoise. There is this guy called Dave Hodge who writes brilliant lessons for beginners.

I am a very low skilled player am looking for some who is patient, fun and perferably on the less expensive side (I am a traveller here for just a while, lets just say I'm not wealthy ) I want to learn just how to play on my own or with a couple of people, make up my own songs nothing crazy. I am very interested in jazz and blues, my goal is to be able to sit with a group of people and play and sing, just have fun with it. ohmy.gif

Hi Zips, I can recommend an English guy called Paul Wyett in Einsteinstrasse (tel. 475431) who is a good teacher, patient and all that other stuff you need as a teacher, plus a great blues guitarist and versatile enough to teach all kinds of other stuff as well. Don't know what his prices are but I don't think you need to sell your body to medical science to pay for his lessons. Well, only bits of it. No, but seriously. Tell him Alison sends regards. Best of luck!

can anyone recommend a good online site to download or view songs with chords? i stumbled on this site http://www.azchords.com, but cannot judge if it is good or not. i'm dabbling away & i think it would be fun to know my G, C, & D chords can make music! oh wait, i learned A the other day (my bf made me learn "sweet child of mine").

There's loads of threads on this already: http://www.toytowngermany.com/search/?q=guitar

I hope some of those links can help you.

A very good site if you're learning guitar (or if you can already play and want to learn more):

http://www.guitarnoise.com/

And some sites for guitar tabs:

http://www.guitartabs.cc/
http://www.famousguitartabs.com/
(both mainly rock/pop)

http://www.classtab.org/
(classical guitar)

(edit: just saw that the guitarnoise site was already mentioned a few posts earlier.)

Guitarnoise is excellent. Has a forum too where you can ask questions.

There's two things you need to be able to play guitar:

1. Dedication.

2. A guitar.
Ulysses
It depends on what you want to be able to play whether you need dedication. You'd be surprised how much you can play with just 3 chords. If you just want an accompaniment to your singing then the guitar is shit easy. If you want to play searing leads, cool riffs and the guitar as an instrument in itself, then as with any instrument, you will need dedication. But it's worth it.
GreenTea
One thing you need at the beginning is a lot of patience and perseverance, until your fingers have acquired the strength and the flexibility they need. With me, it took a year until I was able to get a halfway decent sound out of the guitar. But I'm playing a nylon-string acoustic. Maybe it's easier with an electric guitar, I don't know. Might also have been easier if I'd started learning 40 years earlier. sad.gif Still, I've been playing 3 years now, and it keeps on improving slowly.
One day I'll get an electric axe and then I'll play like Jimi Hendrix. biggrin.gif
Elfenstar
thanks for this post. i've been meaning to put new strings on my guitar for 6 months now sad.gif very lazy, i am.

@ GreenTea: how often you practice?
mrbrain
I'm also a novice guitar player. I've owned one for 7 years, but only really played it for one seriously, and then just off and on since then. On my next trip to the States I'm bringing it out and would love to meet up with other beginners in attempt to make some music. I like to play blues.
GreenTea
@ Elfenstar: I try to practise at least half-an-hour every day - that's probably the minimum if you want to make progress. But I spend too much time trying to play fancy stuff instead of getting a good grasp of the basics like changing chords. And once a week I get together after work with some guitar-playing colleagues, which sometimes gives bizarre results since we're all into different kinds of music, from Bach through flamenco, blues, jazz, pop, rock to heavy metal. blink.gif

@ mrbrain: I owned my guitar for about ten years before a guitar teacher came into my life and I started to play it!
If anyone's interested in meeting up for a novice guitar session, I might be interested, but my problem is finding the time to do even 10 percent of the things I want to do.

okay, let's back up a bit -- what I'd like to do is learn enough guitar to be able to play accompaniments at church. You guitarists out there -- how did you learn? Self-taught? Lessons?
Sin
Self taught with some minor adjustments after 18 months to fix a lazy thumb problem. We needed a bass guitarist when Duke Puke (The 17th Earl of Hurl) had to relocate back to England. After searching around I thought 'Fuck it, I'll have a go'. So I picked up this warped necked lump of crap and worked and worked like hell to master it. I had just split up with a Japanese girlfriend and wasn't really feelin' like goin' out and socialisin', so I bashed away most nights for two or three hours. Sometimes my fingers bled, and I had a permanent blister on my right index finger. Then I started goin' to a music shop and playin' the best that was on the rack. Mate of mine is a big record producer and he said that you can buy anything on eBay, but the guitar has to fit your fingers. I found this Fender 'P' which fitted nicely. I'd go to the music shop so often to play it they started to think I lived there. I finally bought the baby and I still practise every day for at least an hour (mostly looking for new basslines and melodies now). It helps me relax. After 18 months I went to see a specialist teacher for half a dozen lessons and she fixed my left thumb wanting to go horizontal along the back of the neck all the time. I'm still crap, but hey! It works for me.

@mrbrain: If you like blues, a good book is "Blues you can use", and the follow-on "More blues you can use" by John Ganapes.
I haven't got very far with it yet, and anyway my nylon-string classical guitar isn't the most appropriate instrument for blues, but maybe one day I'll get myself a steel-string. Will need to toughen up my fingers a bit though. I had a go at playing a friend's steel guitar last night, and doing a slide nearly made salami out of my fingers.

@betsy: I had a teacher who taught me the basics, and some very brief insights into different styles - classical, flamenco, bossanova, blues, rock, reggae... - but he's left Munich now, and I'm just struggling along on my own cos I don't have the time to trail along to a music school once a week. I think if you're a complete beginner you do need someone to show you how to play, just so you know you're doing things right. Once you've figured out the basics, it's really down to practice, practice, practice.

It depends on how much you want to play.

I'm completely self taught but I always regret not having some lessong because I know I would play better.

You have to have the motivation or lessons won't help. If you have enough motivation, you will teach yourself.

I found that watching other players helped me at the start too.

Whichever way you choose its practice, practice, practice

Good luck

PS I always find that buying a new guitar helps me practice more... cool.gif

I really, really want an original '53 Fender P (and I've seen one in Montreal for sale), but I'm torn. I would feel so guilty towards my 2000 Fender P Custom... like havin' a second child. Is this just a bass guitarist thing?
Rose&Pete
I use the child comparison theory here...

If I have one child I love that child, if I have 2 children, do I love the 1st one any less ?

Of course not, love for a child or guitar is infinite.

I currently own four acoustic guitars (which is 4 more than I deserve, given my standard of playing). A colleague of mine had seven at the last count. And a couple of years ago, Eric Clapton auctioned off no less than 56 from his collection for charity:

FIFTY SIX???

There isn't that many bass guitars in the whole universe... is there? unsure.gif
Yeti
@Sin

You lot have a problem with numbers higher than 4, dontcha ?
Sin
How many is 4 again? I thought it went 1, 2, some, lots. unsure.gif
GreenTea
Uh ... or maybe it was only six guitars - I can count to six smile.gif ... but then I'm not a genius like Eric Clapton.

I actually think I have that book, but back in the States where my two guitars are. I'm actually listening to Mississippi John Hurt right now! Damn, I wish I could play like that...

I'm looking for lessons (individual or group) where both my 8 year-old daughter and I could learn to play the guitar together.
We're both complete beginners - don't even own a guitar yet - and my daughter does not speak much German yet (although I'm sure that will soon change).
If you know anyone who would be willing to teach us, please send us an e-mail to david@eatonfamily.de

Thanks, Julie

My daughter and friend are looking for a guitar teacher over the holidays. They started playing E-guitar last summer and have made quite a lot of progress but would benefit from some lessons. They only want to play their type of Music eg (Arctic Monkeys/Libertines/Franz Ferdinand) and have taught themselves to play using Tabs rather than actually reading the music. They are 16/17 yr. old girls. Anyone have any suggestions ?

Learn chords and practice practice practice and taking piano lessons wouldn't hurt.
