"Bei erfolgreicher Nachrüstung des Fahrzeuges können Autofahrer die Eingruppierung in eine bessere Schadstoffgruppe erreichen." If I understand it correctly, and I'm pretty sure I do, it says that cars can be retrofitted in a way that improves their class.

Technically, it doesn't say that all cars can be retrofitted to improve their class. It just says that if they can be retrofitted successfully, then their class can be improved. (or maybe you meant that anyway? just thought I'd point it out, as it might be misunderstood)

It's a classic coty v federal issue. Neither wants to get blames by people like Tom 17.

What are "people like Tom17" exactly? smile.gif

Yes, that's true, however it's only possible in limited circumstances.
EDIT: As Tom_a points out.

In the wider ADAC article I read, they add the following sentence:
"Für Benziner gibt es nur noch im beschränkten Umfang Nachrüst-Kats."

But you're right, it's certainly worth checking out...once it becomes certain if the ban will ever get implemented.

Tom_a: yes, that's what I meant. In our case, the car already had been successfully retrofitted to improve the Euro-class, from what my husband says.

People who's cars and address combo on the borderline in both cases make them fall under these regs. smile.gif

Thing is, our car does have a cat already so surely should be in the category of cars that have cats.. i.e. not Euro Class 1.. Or am I missing something?

Is it possible my Zulassungsbescheinigung (Farzeugschein) is wrong?
MonksTown
I thought you were saying earlier that your car was in the category that munich City Council didn't want on the ban list but the Federal goverment had put there. Anyway, people who are in that catgory will be looking for someone to blames so they are passing the buck innit.

There's two kinds of cats defined - the old 1st generation ones (as detailed in appendix XXIII of the StVZO, the German traffic registration laws) and the newer ones (meeting Abgasrichtlinie 91/441/EWG, European guidelines on exhaust emissions). Your car seems to be in the former category, which is lumped in with cars that have no cat.

Unlikely, but possible.

Naah, just want to work out what I have to do to get it through. I want to still be able to use our car for occasional alpine trips and ikea/walmart without having to hike the last 200m with ski-gear/50Kg shopping/ikea furniture etc... Not blaming them for the reasoning - it makes sense really.

Ahh ok, I see now. Maybe I can upgrade to the kind of cat that gets me into a non Klasse 1... I will have to investigate this...

Just got back from ADAC where I was asking about this. According to the technical guy I was talking to, the law is in the process of being changed. Nothing final, more of a "don't quote me, but..." moment really, but he was saying that they are moving to get cars with schlusselnr's ending in 0 - 13 exempt from this ban as they do not (as pointed out above) produce any particulate pollution.

He also said it would not be until 2008 some time that the bans are likely to come into place. His advice to me was to leave it for now as he thinks the newer version of the law may just get through.

I take it these new laws only apply to German registered cars and not those registered in the UK that may visit Munich from time to time?
Anyone know?
thanks
Guy
The ban will apply to all cars, wherever they are registered. Whilst this is obviously going to be problematic and lead to lots of foreigners getting busted just because they didn't know, it has to apply to all, otherwise the loophole would be exploited.

They do really need to work on this, though, as they currently say that you will have to submit type conformity papers if your car is registered abroad. This could be as simple as showing the type conformity from your car handbook or looking at the year of manufacture, but you will have to turn up at an approved centre.

Dam that’s the idea I just had when looking at the thread! Mine is so old that they didn't even think exhaust fumes were bad for you!!! laugh.gif

And been a Kit car I am sure that it will be far too much hassle to get them to look at the paper work (no hand book etc!) never mind let me drive it in the forbidden zone!

There will be an exception for oldtimers but I think this is limited to cars with the H on their license plates for tax-free cars. You can only get that kind of license if you have another "real" car registered in your name, though.
