New Expat in Munich

Where do English-speakers gather?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > Themes > Newcomers
bruppel
Hey all,

Just relocated to Isarvorstadt from Philadelphia, PA, US for work. I had never been to Europe before, let alone München. If anyone can fill me in on somewhere CLOSE where I might meet up where some of the english speaking crowd drinks (I am yet to try and figure out the public transportation system, and my German is limited), it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
Joliet Jake
Welcome bruppel.

There are too many options to give you just one recommendation! Keep your eye on the Munich Events & Meetups forum for current info. I know there are a couple of beergarden meetups planned for today, as well as karaoke at the Arc.

Oh, and the U-bahn is your friend. Take a little time to figure out the basics and the whole city will open up.

Hey, a new face in my hood ! Welcome in munich bruppel !
If you are interested in sports, there is also ultimate frisbee every sunday in the englischer garten (see under sport in munich) nice group and they normally head over to the beergarden afterwards.
There are maps, directions and everything in the thread bit if you are not sure how to find them
just PM benpanter, he´s a very helpful guy. smile.gif

from Philadelphia, PA, US

Where exactly?

Sorry, it simply just cracks me up that Americans are so bloody precise about where they are from. Never ceases to make me laugh.
Hutcho
Saying your from Philadelphia is just like saying your from Manchester.. I don't get your point..
DJ_Jazzy_Guff
What do you want him to do? Give you his fucking house number??!! Behave yourself Hutcho. Welcome bruppel. Just head along to one of the events and introduce yourself.
sarabyrd
Welcome bruppel, you'll readjust soon enough.
@ dr - maybe because they think everyone else is as bad at geography as they are wink.gif Not to mention the multitude of cities that share the name but not the state (and sometimes not even the country) - Springfield for example. Not to mention Springfield, neighboring city Shelbyville.

exactly, I don't really see the problem with the amis saying town, state - it's probably sensible. Obviously it leads to more borderline sensible cases like London, England (although I guess there is a London in Canada, maybe the US too) but I can see where the construction comes from.

Exactly! When I lived in Canada if someone talked about London - it was in Ontario, but here? huh.gif

Anyway, Welcome Newbie, hope to meet you at an event soon. Curry nights are a fun smaller venue to meet people.
Topsy
there's places called Philadelphia in New York, Tennessee and Mississippi (just looked it up), so putting the PA at the end is a good idea, I reckon.
the "US" bit is probably a bit superfluous, though. wink.gif

anyroad, welcome to Munich, all that stuff
where's Isarvorstadt when it's at home, anyway?? blink.gif

Well thats simply ridiculous. London is London. Get some original bloody names for cities rather than just nicking ones that have are already taken I say. At least put the word "new" in front of it or something. Lame effort, but an effort at least.
Schotte
wouldnt you rather they made no effort than a lame effort? i would. at least then you dont have to wonder about it for a bit just move on and assume they are lazy.

Ok, I see what you mean now and actually tend to agree with you..

Another immigrant...

Glad to see I sparked a bit of conversation/ humor/ hostility with my precise explanation. Perhaps I should have included the latitude and longitude as well... Anyway, looking forward to trying to find one of the gatherings. I wil likely join up for the next softball and rugby events. Thanks for the many welcomes and suggestions!

As football is just around the corner, learn of the Arc. That is where the FF crew will meet up.
bruppel
Think I'll try to find my way to the Arc tonight. Be on the lookout for the guy who knows no one!
