Got off the plane from the States yesterday to this shit. I was in Vermont (and Boston) for the last 2 weeks and had 90s weather the whole time - sunny every day. Boy, am I bumming. Still, I wore a skirt, short sleeves and my Tevas to work today. Gotta show off that tan while I still have it!

i guess all the complaining about the 'heat wave' worked and now we're back into SHIT weather once again. uncool.

Autumn started early August sad.gif

Yesterday was dry during the daytime up here but its tipping down at the moment sad.gif
No fun at all...

You should come down south -- the predicted Indian Summer starts tomorrow!

Yeh, high pressure is back. Maybe we'll get an awesome Autumn like the last one. It was a cracker.

And then lets hope for a winter just like the last one. It was excellent as well. In fact, other than August and that cold spell at the end of May we've had pretty damn good weather over the last year.
Small Town Boy
Unfortunately the long-range forecast is for a mild and wet winter across Europe. That means grey skies and drizzle instead of heavy snowfalls followed by blue skies sad.gif

So make sure you appreciate autumn!

Well its been heavy showers & strong winds all day. Like April (gone bad)!
The wind is howling round the house at the moment (its quite warm...)

Welcome to the Bavarian phenomenon, a temperature inversion, known as the Föhn...
Small Town Boy
The warm weather forecast for this week is the result of a high pressure system, not the Föhn. Most of central Europe is forecast to have warm, sunny weather. It can't be the Föhn, because those winds generally only last for 2-3 days tops and, moreover, I haven't heard any Bavarians whingeing about headaches. The Barbarians get headaches just thinking about the Föhn.
Jeeves
I'm not Bavarian but I do get headaches in this kind of weather. Started yesterday afternoon and I'm not imagining it. I haven't whinged about it yet but can if you like.

Anyhow, what's this talk of an Indian summer? It still is real summer, it just hasn't felt like it for a month.

They can't predict what the weather is going to be like in 3 days, I don't have much faith in them long term. Often they come up with these predictions and more often than not they are wrong.

Welcome to the Bavarian phenomenon, a temperature inversion, known as the

This phenomenon exists in other parts of the world where an airstream is forced over
a mountain range (thus depositing its mosture on the way up & cooling at 0.5C per 100m)
and then coming down the lee side warming up at 1C per 100m. Dry air gives
good visibility of course...

Exists in Denver Colorado and even on Iceland where a southerly wind can
cause temperatures over 20C on the North coast..

I think we have a similar phenomenon in Southern California - the Santa Ana winds, its called. Dunno if the phenomenon results from the same factors as mentioned above, but we get hot, gusty winds for a few days, and everyone gets cranky and headachy. And it gets dusty as hell, at least in San Diego, as the winds seem to sweep up half the sand and dirt from the eastern desert and carry it right into town.

certainly got some great "larger than life" views of the alps yesterday from erding, so definitely a foehn day. just grateful that august has passed; it really was a miserable month.

spot on. i am in the rhein/neckar region and there is no cause for föhn here. wonderful, warm weather.

yup, you got the same thing 'cept coming from the sierra nevada. have you heard of chinook winds (rocky mountains)? same phenomenon, just different names.
