Translation company recommendations

We have an electrical product being made for us.

I am just designing an outer box, and an instruction manual. The manual will not be very long,
around 6 pages of A5 in each language- and the text will be spread out. I am writing the English
so would ideally like translations into the following:

German
French
Spanish
Swedish
Danish
Norwegian
Finnish
Dutch
Russian
Italian

Would be interested in a quote for the work please, although ideally only wish to work with 1 company for the whole lot, or at least 90%. Obviously German is dead easy for me to get done, but the ones like Russian, Finnish and Dutch are trickier.

So please don't tell me you can do the German as it doesn't help much (unless part of the whole job).

Salford Translations should be able to take this on for you . Contact name Heidi Kerschl, a muenchner kindl herself.

"Electrical product" doesn't necessarily involve IT hardware or software (which Salford Translations seem to specialise in).

Many Norwegians can read Danish but it's well worth the cost of translating it for them into their own language if you're trying to get them to buy something new or different.

AFAIK you are supposed to translate only into your native language, or maybe another one if you happen to be bilingual. Speaking 2, 3 or however many foreign languages doesn't mean you can translate properly into all of them.

What's wrong with aiming for quality work done by qualified translators? As it is there are too many people out there who give the profession a bad name by claiming to be able to translate from and into different languages on the strength of such rock-solid qualifications as high-school French, a semester in Spain and an Italian grandmother.

For the record I am a qualified and experienced translator but I would never translate into a language that isn't my native language. I would translate from German or from Russian but never into these languages.

Agree with Kay and Koala - and the same should apply to all professional translators.

You wouldn't want someone who "once studied medicine for a few semesters" doling out prescriptions, someone whose mother is a midwife trying to deliver babies, someone who "spends a lot of time in hospitals" conducting medical trials or even a qualified dentist attempting heart surgery, would you?!

Just a quick update. I got behind on writing my instruction manual in english because I was waiting for further product information to arrive etc.

In the end I submitted the translations to be done at http://www.click2translate.com

Apologies for those that PM'd and I could not use. It was important to me that I had a one-stop solution for ALL the languages, as I had already found out that co-ordinating different people for different languages is a minor drama.

Click2translate have a fast turnaround, and easy ordering process etc. I don't know if they are the cheapest, but they had all the languages I required and I don't think are in the "ripoff" league.

Also morally I am always using the freetranslation.com site for bits and pieces over the years, so seemed fair to reward for this free service.

Can you tell us how much they charge and whether their rates vary with target language?

The are in the SDL colours, must be good choice.

They are part of SDL.com if that helps, but means nothing to me.

They do charge slightly more for Norwegian, Swedish and Danish.

I think on my second larger translation (1550 words) it worked out at an average of 20 cents per word across the languages.
