Travelling to Frankfurt from Munich by car

Tips on which route is fastest

Does anyone have experience driving to Frankfurt from Munich? I will be going on Saturday morning and am not sure whether going via Nuernberg or Stuttgart would be a faster route. I am quite happy to sit at 200km/hr, and I know that most of the way to Stuttgart is limited to 120, so what about via Nuernberg, is that road faster (ie does it have a limit during the day?)?

Any estimates for how long it would take? map24.com reckons 3:15 via Nuernberg with average autobahn speed set at 120.

the most direct route is A9/A3. time will depend on traffic density but I'd calculate about 3 1/2 hours, although that depends on there in Munich you start and where in Frankfurt you finish.

do a route plan Map 24 in my experience the A9 always tends to get jammed on the weekends, most of it is only 2 lanes, so take some good CDs with you!

yes the A9/A3 is a nightmare on a friday afternoon/evening but so too are the alternatives. Even better than CDs: an iPod with an iPod adapter for you car stereo.

As far as I know most of the A9 is 3 lanes. The A8 (Stuttgart) is far worse (2 lanes and no hard shoulder)

yeah but there is a horrible stretch on the A3 throught the hills past Würzburg to Arschaffenburg where it is two lane. i hate that bit.

Thanks for the tips guys, I am actually going Saturday morning so will take the A9 I think. There are some pretty nasty bits on the A8 as well before and after Stuttgart, I just had no experience of the A9/A3. I am starting from west Munich and going to East Frankfurt, so hopefully I can make it in 3.5 hours or less.

As for the music, my radio plays MP3 CDs, so I will just burn one off before I leave.

I've never done this before but if you are travelling from the west of munich A8/A7/A3 might be an option. I live in the north east of munich so A9/A3 is the only sensible one for me. maybe some can comment who has done the A8/A7/A3 route

I guess it depends on what time of the morning you're travelling. You might beat the 120km/h restrictions before 8 in the mroning I think...

OK so I did the A9/A3 route and the only problem was some roadworks about 50km outside of Frankfurt. I normally ignore the traffic warning thingies (so far never had a problem) but of course this time I got stuck for 30 minutes or so. Hmm, must remember to take a pee when I get the chance, you never know what is around the next corner biggrin.gif

If it weren't for that, the journey would have been about 3 hours in both directions (sticking to about 160km/hr when possible). Most of this route is unrestricted and it wasn't that busy during the times I drove (left M Saturday 9am and F Sunday 5pm).
