Mussels - where to get 'em in Munich

I've got a hankering. Its hot, and I wanna start a fire, then cook up a paella on it. Now, at the risk of offending Valencians, I'm not putting bloody snails and rabbit in it, I want prawns and mussels and squid, tourist paella styley.

Now, before the days of farming mussels, it was said that you should only eat them in a month with "r" in it - I've even heard people say that if there is no r in the month, mussels are poisionous. Utter bollocks of course, it is actually more to do with the fact that mussels don't reach full size until after the hot summer months.

Anyway, this is all pretty irrelevant now, with farming and such, but my fishmonger last week had NO mussels atall in stock, and was not planning to get any in. So my question is, does anyone know if there are some mussels on Viktualienmarkt today? I don't wanna embark on a massive trek into town for nowt. If anyone works nearby, and can quickly pop out and have a butchers, it'd be most appreciated.

When I lived in spain we'd go get them ourselves while we were swimming during the summer heat...

Anyways, I have no idea on Viktualienmarkt...but if anywhere has them, you know it'd be there...

(I will be there in an hour...but then I've got no internet connection there...)

Good luck, I'd love some good spanish paella as well.

The fish section at the Metro usually has some mussels, if you have no luck at Viktualienmarkt.

Kaefer has them occasionally. But I thought the restriction for eating them was that the red tide comes when the water is the warmest and this is during the height of the summer.

I'd warn anyone about mussels from Metro - check 'em carefully before buying. I only bought them there one time, and they entire bag were dead when I went to cook 'em. Gutting it was, gutting.

Lurz Fisch in Solln have a great selection of fresh fish etc - never been disappointed. You just have to hold your breath when you go there, cos it strongly smells of fish!

That place in Solln looks wicked!
Got really excited when I saw that I could order now, and it would be delivered by 5PM!!!

Then saw that the Mindestauftragswert is 180 EUR. My woman will go apeshit if I blow 180 notes on a load of shellfish, but man, it would be an awesome paella.

S'ok, I used to live in Asia, the land of preserving fish by letting it rot in the sun.

Well if they were frozen when fresh they should be okay.

Nordsee (between Hauptbahnhof and Karlsplatz) sometimes has them fresh in vacuum packs. Not sure if all Nordsees have them... They were very fresh, not expensive and yummy! smile.gif

for some reason i find the terms "fresh" and "vacuum packed" to be mutually exclusive. blink.gif

Perhaps the reason is that it is not possible? smile.gif

Nordsee does sell mesh bags of live ones though, and the big fish place in viktualienmarkt on the corner with the very fancy window display (sorry blanking on name) always has them. Also Galleria Kaufhof. These sources should had fairly good turnover so might be more reliable than others.
